Silver, Gold, Platinum Identification;

Sorry if this has been covered in the past;

What is a sure-fire way (other than calling the VIN number in to Florida) to distinguish a Milano as a Platinum (without driving it)... from say a Gold or a Silver? Any exclusive markings or options?

I can't tell a silver clover leaf from a platinum one... Gold's easy, but then again, badge-swopping....

Very weird, I typed the very same question yersteday but the two mice who need to run on their little wheel to keep my PC going started to demand a pay rise and threatening strike action , so I gave up!!


To be honest...until I started reading this board I didn't realise that there were several levels of spec in the US.

I would be very interested if someone could give me a bit of a run-down on the differences..

The Silver came with a driver's side mirror only, steel wheels, and tweed covered seats. The Gold came with alloy wheels, velour covered seats, and both driver's and passenger's side mirrors. Don't know what the Platinum came with. The Verde came with 3.0 motor, Recaro seats, and a limited slip.

I believe the Silver came with no Fog lamps. The gold came with standard cloth interior but the seats were more sporty (although the 89 Gold had 87 Silver seats in it, along with the verde back spoiler). The Platinum had leather heated seats, larger wheels, no spoiler ,(I believe) a LSD trans, and ABS. THe Verde with wider wheel arches, Recaro interior, 3.0, and LSD trans. You should be able to look at the interior and tell the difference. THe Platinum will seem nicer inside. Hope that helps.

Clear as mud !!

The spec of mine sounds similar(ish) to a Verde...although I suspect that there will be several differences with such things as the exhaust (I don't have to run a CAT!)

One sure fire way to distinguish a Platino from a Silver/Gold is the ABS light. This would also be present in a Verde but the entire color scheme of the dash is orange on the Verde and white on the Plat/Gold/Silver cars.

Or just pop the hood and look for all the ABS junk. Non-abs cars have a small brake resevoir and conventional looking booster & master cylinder while the ABS resevoir is huge and attached to a large complicated looking MC. There will also be a pump and accumulator on the drivers side of the engine compartment.


Or you could just look at the badge on the back...
(Of course someone could have changed it)

At this point in time, it's hard to actually find a "stock" "from the factory" any-spec Milano. Most that I've come across have been "upgraded" (if they're lucky) or "downgraded" (not so lucky).

There is a FAQ somewhere and I'll look for it as soon as possible.

Out here on the East Coast there are still quite a few stock Milanos.

Note - the list below changed a bit from year to year, but in general:

Silver - 2.5L V6, power windows, locks, steering, brakes, A/C, brown tweed seats, small center console, am/fm/cassette

Gold - like silver, but added larger center console, passenger side mirror, cordeuroy seats and had optional sunroof.

Platinum - like Gold, but added cruise control, leather trimmed seats, optional A/C, self-leveling rear suspension, optional automatic transaxle, Limited slip and ABS.

Verde - like Platinum, but had 3.0L V6, orange gauges, no automatic, taller gearing with Limited Slip, no self-leveling (but different sport suspension settings), Recaro interior, wheel flares, sporty rocker covers, rear spoiler (in black molding strip)

My Gold came with cruise control and A/C.??

Like I said, ALL US Milanos had A/C as standard. The Cruise was optional on the Gold.

East Coast Stock Milanos all the way! Mine was a gold, and 99% stock. (tires were new, and you know - not the same gas and oil that came originally )

Oh, one thing I forgot!

The Silver had steel wheels 14 X 6 with hubcaps. The Gold and Platinum had aluminum "wine-glass" wheels 14 X 6. The Verde had two types of wheels. The early '87 cars had the 15 X 7 "wine-glass" wheels used on the '86 GTV6, while later versions used a "phone-dial" wheel. These 15 inch wheels were an option on the Platinum.

Well I own a Gold, Platinum, and a Verde so I can probably add some to these posts.

All three cars are early 87' cars. All three were built in mid 86' so later cars probably had some changes.

The Gold has 220,000 miles and I've only owned it for about a year.

The Verde has 107,000 miles, I've owned it for 6 years and helped maintain it prior to my ownership (was a friends).

The Platinum has 285,000 miles, I've owned it for 11 years. Picked it up from a friend with 50,000 miles on it.

All three have aircon.

The Gold: 14" wheels (alloy speedlines were stock). No sunroof,
4.1:1 Non-LSD. 5-speed. No sunroof, Not positive on the seats because this one had a Verde interror added prior to my ownership. Non ABS. 2.5 l. white gauges with green backlighting

The Platinum: 15" wheels (alloy speedlines stock). Sunroof, 4.1:1 LSD 5-speed (I have heard that all were automatic from 88' on). Non self leveling suspension (only on Autos) Sunroof, Gray leather (only model with leather) ABS. 2.5 l. white gauges with green backlighting

The Verde I think we all know. 15" speedlines (same as Platinum but went to "phone dials" later on) Sunroof (a few didnt' get them) 3.56 ?? LSD. 3.0l. Orange guages and backlighting
