Engine Replacement--Flywheel/Driveshaft Question

so i'm still trying to get my new engine in my $150 "ebay special" milano but i have a question: i bought a used engine but i'm wondering if i need to switch out the flywheels so the car's original flywheel is matched to the driveshaft? in other words, this would insure that the complete driveshaft was the OEM set up so i won't encounter any balance issues. i'm not sure how much the flywheel factors into the balancing but if each mounting bolt and washer is important, i would think the flywheel is also.

as always, thanks very much--

Bob,

I think it is more important to keep the fly wheel matched up with the pulley on the front of the engine, I think the rotating mass of the engine is more critical than the shaft, I believe the shaft is balanced indepedent of the engine.

sam,

hmmm, hadn't thought of that. and i've got to admit i wasn't even thinking of swapping out the flywheels until i bought an engine stand and realized that there was no way to attach it to the alfa engine without removing the flywheel (actually the 3 long bolts which mount the front donut). i didn't really want to remove the loctite-ed flywheel bolts but tired of trying to work on that engine with it flopping around on an engine hoist.

any secrets to mounting to an engine stand without removing flywheel? i know it's not that bigga deal but the rainy season's coming and i'm getting lazy . . . .

The flywheel is not bad to get on and off, just make sure you have a thin enough socket to get between the bolts, the flywheel only goes on one way so you don't have to worry about getting it on wrong and messing up the balance. I have mine mounted with out the fly wheel on a stand, there are some stands that let you mount to the engine mounts on the side but I would not know where to start looking for one of those.

I borrowed a stand from a friend that would allow this, requires a little custom fab though, but nothing difficult. Check it out here:
