Never ending more power conversation

Just out of curiousity if I wanted to pull the 2.5 out of my Gold and drop in another engine and my choice was between a Verde engine or a 164L engine what would you do...assuming that I have all the parts and pieces to install the FWD 164L engine into a Milano? What are the differences between these engines? HP figures are pretty close??

Assuming that both solutions come with their original ECU, harness, and everything. The main difference is that the 164 engine has a more modern engine management system - Motronic instead of L-Jetronic. Motronic is easier to chip, although I hear Unichip now can do the L-Jet cars.

if you can get a 164s or any 164 after xSN you will get the piston oilsquirters that will let you run more CR or more timming with out puting a hole in a piston.
if you search somewhere on the BB is a list of when they swiched over.
but you will need a 3L flywheel or some spacer/adapter and it will have to come apart to balence the parts. Now if you get a Verde motor with the front pully and flywheel you will not need to ballence it. but I would say if you have it out do it all, new pistons/new valve guides etc. And if you have it apart you might as well go for the hi CR pistons. so you will want the oilsquirters.

I put in a 164S in my Verde but I now need to take the heads off again as I did not redo them. and it turns out the valve guides are very bad and I am sucking a lot of oil in one cyl even with new valveguide seals. so I regret trying to save some there. I also used the old S pistons with new rings. if I had to do over I would have got all new. I used my old crank, rods, pully flywheel so I did not have it ballenced but used the 164S block and bad heads. The 164S was trashed my old Verde engine with 230Kmiles looked new inside so I did not think the 164 would be so bad but it was.. after talking to a lot of engine guys it seems that who ever had it last sandblasted somthing and the grit got inside and gound everything up. (never sandblast engine internals)

as a side note. my old block bearings were worn and I think that was why I had low oil PSI so if you get a Verde engine and do not want to do much at lest change the bearings.

Try
mixing parts 164 and Verde 3.0L engines
Info originally from Alfisto Steve, correcting a misconception I had from someone else's comments about S engines only having squirters....

Off topic...in some sense..
This is what i want to do when money and time allows it....aka not in university
Go and get yourself a greg gordon supercharger, figure out how to custom mount a porsche 944 gearbox, move the clutch upfront.
Boost the engine to an insane amount of horsepower...using the stock 2.5

At this point I'm leaning towards taking the 164L 3.0 and port, polish, chip it get some headers, free flow exhaust and I think that 220HP or so should do the trick. For now I'll drive the car as it is 'cause it sounds great!
