enrichment circuit?

Is there a cold weather enrichment circuit other than the cold start valve? Reason being that my car has a Howe Aluminum racing radiator in it. Very efficient. Now in just mid 50 degree weather the temp runs around 160 degrees. After a while 15-20 miles it will creep up to 175. It has never gone over 185. I just don't want to be running too rich if I don't have to. Warmed up there's a very slight 25-50 rpm surge on occasion.

the termostat should regulate the termp no mater how cold the radiator.

you might want to check that the termostat is working OK some of them bind up and will stick. and rember the dash gage might be not so good too. I notice my dash will show different temps. but my ECU shows it to be dead on 82°C ± 1° 179.6°F± 1°
in traffic it will creap some as my radiator is not so good. I just looked at log and I see it got up to 86.7°C (188°F at one point )

Sly, how do you check the temp on the ECU?

Gilles

Probably has aftermarket engine management system with laptop/data logging hooked up.

The stock temperature gauge is a total joke. We have all these posts that say "Mine never leaves 175!!" - Yet the fan is supposed to go on a 195.

Seeing how I'm not computer savvy I verified the coolant temp the old fashion way, with a thermometer. I just thought that running at 160-175 degrees was a bit on the cool side. I have only a service manual at this point to go by. I did not pull the thermostat to see what it's temp rating is. So, do I understand that there is no cold temp fuel enrichment other than the cold start valve? btw, I'm not familiar yet w/ the L-jetronic but I've noticed also that there is no high idle on cold start. It just starts and runs. After being warmed up the idle will increase from 775-800 cold to just about 900 warm. I did change the TPS switch after checking it w/ a meter and adjusted the AFM O2 screw and the plugs seem fine

Yes, there is. It's the coolant temp sensor for the ECU (which is a different sensor than the temp gauge). As the coolant temp increases, the resistance of the sensor changes. The ECU takes this value, along with other sensor inputs, and calculates the injector pulse width (injector on time). Basically, the hotter the coolant, the shorter the pulse width.

That coolant sensor is a vital part of the FI system. Disconnect it when the engine is running and see what happens!

There is a high idle on cold start. it is the air bypass on the right valve cover.
when cold it is open and will let more air by pass the buterfly. as it heats it will start to close. it also has +13.8V to help heat it up so it will close some more based on runing time as well as the temp. The white 2 pin temp sender on the thermostat case and the tempsender in the airbox both come into play for seting the mix

Aahh thanks very much, sounds like more to read up on and play with. I just want to get all the cold start/running circuitry and components squared away correctly before winter slams us. Hopefully this wkend I'll be able to get back to it

Update: Got to mess around a bit today. Found very little/no vacuum at the intake plenum, traced lines and found a ruptured line at the fuel/vapor recovery canister up under the R/F fender. Set the timing, replaced the little idle rubber gasket, set idle, still surging. Backed up on the screw for the air butterfly @ the TPS till it just made contact and the surging quit. I bottomed the CO2 mix screw and backed it out 2-1/2 turns and it now is idling 98%smooth, no surging. Timing is just a hair in front of the F mark. I'm getting happier! Next is the cold start/hi idle circuit. I'm wondering if it's been too warm for the air temp sender to engage. As it gets colder I will wait to see if it starts to work. If not then I guess I'll test the air valve and thermotime. Joe
