how to tell a LSD box?

hi guys,

i have a spare gearbox sitting around for about 3 years now it is about time i do something about it.

as i am quite sure it is a box for the 75 but i am not sure if it is for the 1.8(carb) model or the 2.0TS model. externally the boxes both looks like same, no part number to indicate any difference too.

i have some questions:

- how to tell them apart externally?
- since i have not seen the internals, how do you tell if the box has an LSD? how does the friction plates look like?
- if there is no LSD, can i fit an LSD on the 1.8 box? anything i should watch out for?

it would be great if anyone can give me a clue!

Open up the "door" on the right side and pull out the diff itself, the LSD is a very solid looking piece where you can't see the pinion gears, lots of machined surfaces. The open unit is very much the opposite, you can see the pinion gears clearly and everything has a cast finish.
