gasket less oil pans

If you where to install the upper oil pan without a gasket (using only silicon, like Permatex Ultra Black) which approach will work best?

1) Do you install the pan right away after laying a bed of silicone?
If yes, do you finget tight the bolts and let it cure for a few hours, THEN re-torque the bolts?

1a) Or tighten the bolts all the way as soon as you install the oil pan?

2) Do you lay a bed of silicone, let it cure completely (overnight) and THEN, go ahead and install the oil pan and tighten the bolts?

Thank you, Gilles

Allow the silicone to form a skin. The amount of time depends on temeprature and humidity, 15 to 30 minutes depending. If you can just touch it without it sitcking to you then the skin has formed.

This is a great tool to assist in applying silicone or anything that comes in a tube. http://www.valco-cp.com/Tube%20Grip%20Dispenser.htm

One more question

Veny, do you first tight the bolts finger tight and then fully tighten after the silicon has fully cured, (two steps)?

Or you tighten the bolts all at once (one step)?

Thank you, Gilles

Do not allow the silicone to fully cure. Water (humidity)is what sets the slicone. Once a skin has set it has absorbed enough silicone to fully cure itself. I assemble all the nuts and bolts and then tighten them, done.

When I did the pan for my car the gaskit that was in the kit was wrong. so I just used the Wurth DP300 on both sides let it set a few as stated on the tube and bolted it together. no leaks so far.

If you measure from the bottom of the block to the oil pump pick up screen and compare with a measurement from the sump gasket face to the bottom of the oil pick up recess you will find they are surprisingly close, from memory around 5 m.m. when the 2 m.m. gasket is fitted . We should have written it down.
We were too tight to buy a gasket and having a bit of time, made a 2 m.m. aluminium spacer that we fitted with silicone. We machined a step to match the protruding rear main cap and tapered the thickness down the sides to match the low front seal housing. Yeah, we're nuts.

hmm I have a extra block and pan so I guess If I put a pump in I could check with some clay or somthing. when I have some time. So far the oil PSI seems to be ok. at lest the last time my gage worked(it just stoped working and it is in the dash part that busted )

Not sure about the 4 cylinders. I was talking about the V6. I would guess your chain cover without gasket would be ok but you would need to check clearances issues (eg chain rubbing).
