75 Legal in US?

Is the 75 a legal car in the US? Or did only the Milano meet US safety standards? I've been trying to find some documentation on this, but have been unable to. I've seen a 75 or two for sale, and I'm not sure how one would go about registering one if purchased.

Thanks.

My basic understanding is that you will need Alfa Romeo to certify that the car meets the US safety requirements at the time of manufacture, which, considering the different US bumpers and side markers, etc, they will not provide. Even if they did, the EPA requirements of the day would need to be satisfied and that could mean substantial changes too, depending on which model you choose.

In lieu of a certification from the manufacturer, you will need a Registered Importer to handle the modifications for you ($$$$).

A desperate alternative would be to import a 'roller', meaning that it is just a bodyshell for parts. Then you have to convince your DMV that it is reconstructed or something like that. It's illegal and risky though.

What about in the case that the car is already in the country and registered?

The fact that it is in the US and registered does NOT mean it is legal. Though, if it comes with proper paper work (you will need to carefully establish what proper is - DOT, EPA, CARB if in CA, etc) then it should be ok. There are plenty of Milanos (=75), why not just buy one of those? Oh, perhaps someone just slapped 75 badges on their Milano to look different.

I'm not going to pretend that I know anything about the compliance situation but there are US spec 75s...I've got one...complete with those stupid bumpers (which are about to be binned!) internally mounted fuel tank etc etc...the only thing I'm missing are the side markers, so you never know...you may be lucky...

PS anyone know where I can find Milano badges...just to be different

Once the car is 25 years old, then it can be imported with simpl paperwork, the U.S will consider the importation of the car for collection purposes, not for daily driving or for commercial interests.

SO considering the 75 first appeared in 1985, 4 more years (2010) and you can import a 1985 75 with no hassle

xcept the 75 AMERICA, which I belive is identical, bumpers and glass, to the MILANO, same production run, same engines 3.0 V6, minus the cats. Called AMERICA because it was the version of the 75 sold in the U.S.

Bottom line for any car: If it is less than 25 years old and doesn't have a US compliance tag attached to it by the manufacturer, it either needs a certificate from the manufacturer stating that it complies with all DOT, NHTSA, EPA, CARB requirements for the year of manufacture OR it needs to be modified and certified by a Registered Importer in the USA.

These are the legal ways of doing it.

I've flirted with importing nice European cars many times, actually did it once, but never tried any illegal routes, although I have plenty of workable ways of doing it, it's too risky for my dollars.
