remove the starter before removing the engine?

last night I finally got the engine out but had a really hard time getting the starter cable off, the cable (s) it's thicker than the space between the solenoid and the casting below No. 1 exhaust.

I tried to removing the solenoid but the two screws on the back where too stubborn after 17 years of being there.

I don't want to risk damaging the cable during installation, do you have to remove the starter when removing the engine?

Your comments are greatly appreciated
Gilles

Hi Gilles!

Generally, we just remove the cable and leave the starter on the engine when I pull the engine out. But if the cable is hard to remove, I would undo the three bolts that hold the starter and remove the starter along with the cable.

On the other hand, if the cable is really that crusty, it may not be "optimal" anymore and you'd be better off making up a new starter cable so all your current draw will be to turn the starter motor, not heat up a crusty old cable
