Let's just clarify that Monty, you plugged in another ARC display and it went into 'Disco' mode. I'm still puzzled by this

Put another way, when the ARC behaves erratically, this is a good indication that the wiring and grounds have degraded. Thus, it forces you to spend time restoring those systems, and in the process makes sure the wiring and grounds to other, more important systems get attention also.

And, many of the warnings are actually helpful when then ARC is functioning and you can trust they are actual faults.

If you lose the clock, "big-red" and the ashtray you can still get all the warning lights and three 2" gauges in there.

I back Monty up. Did the same thing with an ARC my nephew got from a US Army boneyard in Germany.
Now after a couple of years this ARC is starting to "disco out"

As the ARC system is made up of two components, the control unit above the glovebox and the display in the dash, I'm trying to get a handle as to which unit causes what faults.

I have had one failed ARC control unit, the symptom was random but static (not flashing) lights.

Craig,
I changed the display in the dash.
Unscrewed it, unplugged the old one, plugged in the "new" one.

Some day I'm gonna get up some courage and dive under the dash to find those grounds and clean them up. But not today. . . .

I did get a real nice faux woodgrain finish on the euro model.
