I've been meaning to buy one of those DL1's from the states for a while now, but money keeps escaping me
Are you going to/did you get a Dash2 to compliment it? I've been drooling over that website ever since Mats pointed me at it about a year ago.

It is actually a UK company. Anyway, both Zamani and I are getting the new lower cost Dash3lite display, which is tailored to providing in-car timing information. It is more advanced at that than Dash1 and Dash2. I think it is supposed to be about $300.

Mef,
Well, $400 was for you triplegoahead, could have put that towards the DL1. With you in the deal, we could've had an even better deal. Heck, I'm happy with a single non-widescreen LCD playing GTR2 (but with the G25 wheel of course hehe).
Anyway, I hope we get the Dash3 Lite at the said price.
Jes,
What about the antenna on the trunk? Thing is I don't want it to be permanently mounted on the roof. I was thinking of the edge of the trunk close to the rear glass.
..or make a special mount at the air vent intake close to the windshield.
..or....modify my E30 M3 antenna and mount the GPS antenna right behind it. What I can do is make a small cutout at the bottom of the M3 antenna base. This will allow the GPS antenna's wire to slip through and then put some adhesive on it the base of the GPS antenna.

Hey! Thats much cheaper than real racing!
What price did you guys get the DL1 for? I know they are a UK Company, but the US dollar is weaker than the pound
Got any pics of the Dash3?

Zamani, check out Live For Speed. It's the best I've seen so far. Free download too.

They made me promise not to disclose the actual prices we got them for. I simply called Race Technology directly.
Google Dash3 and some info should pop up - last I heard was that it would be available in 2 months or so.

Transponder
The mount for the charcoal filter (long gone) offered the perfect mount for the transponder I wired it such that the transponder comes on with the ignition key. I have the Evo bumper mounted with 4 bolts and it is a 2 min job to pull or mount the bumper.
I hope to install the data logging system Sunday.

1.4 steady lateral and 1.2 during braking.

It needs to be mounted level and in correct front-rear orientation in order for the gyrometer to measure optimally and put out correct yaw, etc. information.
BTW, I spoke with Race Technology since there was inconsistency in the wiring instruction for the remote start/stop of the logger. They looked into it and said the wiring info on the bag for the start/stop switch is correct - don't mind the info in the software help.

You can also mount it reversed front/back (that's what I did), also try to mount it as low as possible so that the lateral forces are as stable as possible i.e. not a function of how the car is pitching/rolling.
Mine is mounted on the trans tunnel right above the clutch on the cage.
Remote switches on the DL1 seems to be very sensitive to false triggers, I mounted mine so I can reach the button and have a remote status light instead (you can actually see it in my videos).

Mats,
Thanks for the pointers regarding mounting! The mounting info that came with the DL1 also suggested to only "turn on" (power up) the DL1 after the car has started since the starter apparently can cause enough electrical noise to corrupt existing data on the logger. To be safe I was going to wire in a power on-off switch reachable from the drivers seat (next to the remote start/stop logging switch). I suppose the false triggers related to the remote start/stop switch are caused by noise (electrical) being picked up by the wires between the DL1 and the remote switch. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll try route it with that in mind, with the option to disconnect it.

Yep, seems to be some kind of interference/field issue. The real problem is that even though people have done quite a lot to route the wires to the switch correctly you really need a shielded wire to get rid of the false triggers. Very annoying.
I have a remote on/off switch too due to the problem with power fluctuation during cranking, I actually think my Laptimer died (white smoke -> brick) because of a similar incident so I'm extra careful.

I may try twist a ground wire around the wires for the remote start/stop switch.
Has anyone there had problems with vibration? The info with the DL1 also suggests to watch out for vibration. I was thinking of mounting it on the passenger side floor boards, but am concerned that there is too much vibration... But heck, it is meant for a race car...

So we should have a fused power switch and a shielded remote trigger switch for the DL1?
Mats,
Where did you install the GPS antenna?

That's what I'm doing. Though, for shielding I'll try the twisting of a regular wire around the 4-wire cable.

I completed the basic install of the DL1 data logger. I mounted a fuse holder, on/off switch, and start/stop logging toggle switch in the carbon fiber panel to the left of the steering wheel. If there is too much interference I will have to move the start/stop logging toggle switch. I mounted the data logger itself at the passenger floor board, and the GPS antenna is pretty much dead center on the roof. See pics.
Eventually, I plan to add individual wheel speed input as well as other input such as RPM, brake pedal position, ...

Center of roof, 30cm from the back. Pretty much the same position as a regular std GPS on a new car. Not very important actually, it will only affect cornering radius readings a little bit if you put it off center. It can however make a big difference if you put it inside the cabin, I've heard of driftboxes (you know the toy?) that give very different laptimes due to GPS connectivity issues.

I hope it works out for you but the only real fix I've heard is a shielded cable with the shield connected to ground (Body).
