Pulling 164 engine

So, I spent most of Saturday getting the 164S ready for pulling the engine. It is almost ready, still got to undo shift linkage, engine mounts, and tranny mounts, but otherwise it is pretty much ready. Quite a bit of work. To me, things are a bit more accessible on the Milano. Though, the 164 is not that bad. Find below some pics. The first two the starting point, and the last three the current state of things... If it wasn't for other obligations Sunday the engine would be out by Sunday evening.

Oh, and 164S parts will be up for sale shortly... Already have some of the components from the engine compartment out; Alternator, main ABS electro valve up front, cruise control vaucum gizmo. I drove the car for the 3 miles, and noted no failures/warning lights, etc. This means that ABS, airbag, electronic suspension, etc. is in working order. Not sure about AC. The steering isn't leaking a drop.

So, got a few hours this evening to undo the last few things. The engine is now free and ready to be pulled. The plan is for Colin to stop by and assist me lifting the engine out of the car tomorrow, Tuesday, evening. I'm planning to lift the engine with transmission out the top. This is also how the factory service manual suggests doing it. Though, instead of pulling all wiring off the engine, I pulled the engine harness out of the car and put it on top of the engine. This way I could leave all sensors and wires hooked up to the engine, not running the risk of the brittle Bosch connectors (in particular on the injectors) falling apart. Getting the big connector on the back of the Motronic ECU through the firewall with little space between the firewall and the engine was a little painful, but it worked. A few pics of the "pile" with a close-up of the Motronic ECU connector and another through the wheel well of the front with the AC compressor and alternator removed.

and out came the 164S engine. Colin stopped by this evening, we hooked up the hoist, undid the last two engine mount bolts, and lifted it out. Time to start converting the engine and replace oil seals... Got all the oil seals and oil pan + valve cover gaskets from Centerline including the cig. oil seals. I also got new waterpump, T-belt, Tensioner, and thermostat from them.

A few pics from this evening.

I spent this evening taking off obsolete brackets from the 164S engine as well as the PS pump and bracket. More time consuming, I took of the transmission, clutch, and starter. The 164 transmission is very light compared to the Milano transmission. I can easily move the 164S transmission with differential myself - not the case with a Milano transaxle. I couldn't get the flywheel off as I could not get sufficient leverage on the flywheel bolts while holding the crank shaft nut with a 41 mm socket. I need an extra set of hands to hold the braker bar on crank shaft nut while I put my weight on the flywheel bolts. It was too late to fire up the air impact. I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't appreciate that. Got to get that cordless electric impact.

A few pics. The last one shows the 164S transmission with differential.

Funny... Ron C. and I ("Renaldo") did the exact same job yesterday. We had a pilot-buddy of his helping - yarded the motor from a red "S", split the gearbox and loaded it all up on his truck for preparation to go back in to his Milano Verde!

Good job Jes - you went at it pretty much alone!

Ron and his buddy took about an hour-and-half on their own and the 3 of us took maybe another 2 hours - by the time we had loaded it all up and carted it all off. (He had to bring - and load back up - the hoist and jacks and tools and rollers etc - to do it all on the seller's side-walk in the front of the house!)

Comes out pretty good through the top!

I'm amazed that car was parted, as the red fender, door, and trim, etc are available used, and just bolt on. Another one bites the dust needlessly?

I tend to agree

Damage did not look all that bad, but looks can be deceiving. Besides you know those Milano guys, they have no respect for a 164

Hey - if both Don and Jes say the 164 was beyond salvageable, it's beyond salvageable.

I am sure it's soul will live on in other 164s. ....and Milanos, of course....

COME ON - It's not like that...!

Jes had what was probably THE nicest 164 Q around - a 1995 with only 26K miles on it... He sold it to make room for his race car projects (which is where his heart is.) The car was sold for top dollar - not just dumped or striped down (and while owning it, he took great care of it!)

Jes has owned and maintained some of the FINEST Alfas, including a rare twin turbo Callaway GTV6! He loves these things and always stores them in-doors! Look at the dollars and time that he and I are throwing at these cars - don't tell me that we don't care for them!

This S will live on in the parts that it supplies to keep other members' cars running and the motor will see great service in Roxanne! Could it have been saved? Sure - and the next guy may have put minimum dollars in the car and just driven it in to the ground without further care - which would be worse!?

The S we striped down yesterday was very neglected and again, the heart of the car will live on in Ron's Verde!

Jon - don't want to get sideways with you here either, but give me a break! I am a HEAVY Milano-user and I LOVE my 164s - you know this! (Look at what I am doing with the one LS - I have 3 of them BTW - so save me the "poor unwanted 164" -routine...)

So, undid a few more things. Colin stopped by and we took off the flywheel and mounted the engine on the engine stand. We rolled it outside and cleaned it up a bit. It wasn't really all that dirty to begin with. Here are a few pics.
