I should've kept my mouth shut - just finished fixing some exhaust leaks tonight and fired up only to find that the belt slipped. This is the third time it has done it at home, after doing some totally unrelated work and looking forward to a test drive. I have a hydraulic tensioner without leaks - am I doing something wrong here or is this normal?

No Ed but then I have never heard of anybody using it either. I still have my two in my spare parts stash.

Sorry but sometimes you just have to loose the money and save your property and take it elsewhere (or do it yourself), before the trash the property completely.

Well, being local here I don't think there is another shop that would even touch an Alfa. There's a retired former Alfa wrench in Park City but someone just bought his whole stash of parts and tools. Honestly, this is why I gave up on old cars for a while when I was in school.

Even if the Zat tensioner works, you have to deal with Tom Zat...
How do you buy and Alfa part, from a place called "Alfa Heaven" from a person with an extensive history racing and modifying Alfas, who hates Alfas almost as much as he hates Alfa people and who tells you that he is "...not interested in hopping-up Alfas..."
I would love to be a fly on the wall during a conversation between Tom and Larry Sr. - that ought to be interesting! Yeah, I'm still bitter. Just my 2 cents.
As for the tensioners failing; a fully mechanical, one-time adjustment tensioner with no springs and no gells really is best - the variances at cold-start are short-lived - just let it warm up first and then hammer on it with confidence day after day!
There are other sources!

Jason my 2 cents worth if you aren't going to do your own wrenching on you Alfa I suggest you stay given up on older cars.

As an engineer, I prefer mechanical devices to hydraulic ones.

Zat really isn't a bad guy; I've known him for 25 years. There are a lot of a-holes he had to deal with over the years, and just got tired of all the BS with them and with the AROC. He was doing motorcycle restoration (mostly old 750cc Kawi 3-cylinders), and recently started doing old military vehicles. He still has the "museum", but everything there has just been sitting for at least 5, if not 10 years. He also had some problems when he sold stuff to Mark Guinther, but I won't be put into the middle as to who caused them. Jay Nuxoll, "Mr.102" has had an excellent relationship with Tom for even longer than me! Tom can be very kurt, but he DOES know his stuff!!

I do my own wrenching. Just making the point that for those that don't there's really only one option in Salt Lake, besides the former Alfa (current $$Ferrari$$) dealer. Having fairly recently lived the life of working full time while going to school full time it's not a lot of fun to spend every free minute worrying about your car.

Update: It'll have a freshly rebuilt OEM hydraulic tensioner sometime next week.

After paying for 3 others, Will should do this one for free, including labor!!
Andre's at about 3700 South and 150 East here in SLC also does Alfas. He is currently doing a 1966 GTV with a hot 2 liter for a customer. There are 2 ratty 101 giulia spiders and a ratty 750/101 transition giulietta spider sitting in his "yard", but they need a lot of parts and total restorations.

I don't know how much it's going to cost me yet. I'll find out tomorow or Tuesday.
I've seen the '66, it's my avatar. Very nice car. I'm not sure how much experience Andre has with Alfa's V6 though.

Good luck! Did your mechanic say they did anything different installing it this time?
