are all platinums LSD? is there some way to tell if a tranny is a platinum if it's outside the car? i.e. from the serial number or something else stamped on the casing?

I don't know if there is anyway to tell if the tranny is LSD but if it is a platinum (look for badge and leather seats) and has not already been swaped out then it is a LSD. With all things alfa there are always exceptions but AFAIK all Platinums came with the LSD.

From what I have heard, most platinums no longer have the LSD tranny, becasue alfa had to replace to many of them under warranty for bad syncros they didnt have enough, so they just put normal ones in. They all originally came with an lsd though.

You would NOT replace the LSD when you replace syncros... even if they replaced the entire gear-stack they would not replace the LSD... Your speculation seems pretty unlikely to me...

Wow, a new "old wives" (old mechanics'?) tale.
As Jes said above, it's highly unlikely this happened. The LSD clutches don't wear out that fast.

there must be some way to tell an LSD from a standard? it must have some kind of markings or numbering, doesn't it?

Sure way is to undo right side half-shaft and pull off diffirential side cover and inspect differential. There are no external markings on transaxle casing.

Larry from APE was the one who told me that, he said he rarely sees one that still has an LSD. Im pretty sure he said when they came back to the dealer with a warranty claim for bad syncros at 30k miles, they just swapped the whole box rather than rebuilding it.

How much is a good drivers door panel worth? I'd pay before you put the effort in if it's in great shape.

Ill check tommrow, you do know shipping something that size would run maybe 25 or 30 bucks. Thats just an estimate.

That sounds very strange. If I would buy a new car that was advertised to have a LSD, I would not accept a non-LSD transmission without a fight...

Alfa's dealer network in the late 80s did not have a particularly good reputation, so I don't find this completely surprising. And, if there's no external way to tell them apart, then there's no incentive for getting it right. I'm not saying that's what happened, I'm just saying it's possible.

Isnt just a matter of simply lifting the rear wheels off the ground and spinning the tires? If they spin in the same direction you have lsd. Opposite is the non lsd, does this make sense?
