yeah imagine a bertone coupe as a sedan delivry wagon

I have yet to see a rear 3/4 picture of a Milano I DIS-like. And I have yet to see anything from the front I like. And THEN I saw an 87 3-series in my church's parking lot, which refocused "dowdy".

That fairly screams "opportunity" to me. The reason why we've got so much interest here is, I think, because we all know the Milano is a diamond in the rough. A particularly coarse rough, yes, but still...

Found this wagon in the Milano Picture Thread (p.8). Not as nice as the renderings here but a start! A lot better than stock IMO.

Form and function are intertwined. Who can say exactly where one ends and the other begins? Almost all the best race cars are very beautiful pieces of machinery as well as being fast! This is no accident. Street's lines on the Fortress are a big improvement, and, no doubt, would improve the car's performance as well, even if for no other reason than that the mechanics working on it would take greater pride in their work - do a better job - when inspired by a better looking shell. Ya dig?

OK, OK, it was me who put up a crap rendering of a Milano wagon a long time ago. For some reason the BB took my picture down , but the thread is still there. Anyway, my idea was to have the rear roof line kick up just a bit, to echo the belt line. However you slice it, a wagon Milano has always been one of my fondest dreams. The orange one gives me goose bumps!

And,

are you ready????

Ahem,

A convertible Berlina. Go ahead shoot me, but god damn it, a convertible Berlina would be gorgeous!!

As long as we're hypothesizing

no and yes

i recently found a stock 2dr volvo 76? out at a wrecker and got MANY pic's someone had welded the doors shut and cut the roof off..she was a stunning piece of work...so i know for FACT a berlina would be one sexy work of art

as for the milano and its "upsweet tail"...im sorry but its the one thing on the car iv ALWAYS hated ..it has that look a low rider rearended me and shoved my junk up....much the same way a 80's cady looks like the trunk was smashed in by a big truck

someones bound to dissagree with that raised line but i call it how i see it

say what you want about the berlina but i swear that would be one of the slickest wagons ever built ..toss on the 80's scca wide body kit with some bbs honey combs big brakes and the bigest volvo motor you can find and a pair of turbos and enjoy..dont forget the 6spd

I know of a 2.5 Milano in Seattle that runs real nice, is well-maintained mechanically, has already been stripped-down on the interior, has a professional roll-cage installed, TeamDynamics wheels and rear coil-overs converted and a number of other improvements made, that can be had for a good price perhaps.

That Caddy Seville was my poor old dad's last car. Sheesh that thing was a POS to drive. The last time I drove it, it had less than 30K on the clock and the shocks were so soft you could barely keep it between the lines at a whole 65 MPH on the freeway.

I'm not defending the weird upswept tail on Milanos although it doesn't look that bad to me. I'm just not convinced that a Milano without some "character" would still be a Milano.

Something I always tell my wife, who is the "actual" Milano owner: "Your car has character like a dog has rabies."

IMO, the car looks best from the rear, from about 5 through 9 o'clock. Something just goes wrong up front. I'll have to do some staring at it while I do an alternator change tomorrow to be more definite.

You're up for the task Short? Cool. I'll help where I can design wise. But I can't share a car no more than I could share a woman. Wait. Aren't they the same!!

On the real though, I would get another 3.7. But it would have to be a TT dry sump. Then throw it in a GTAm Rep and DEMONIZE it - rims, suspension, big brakes, blend the flares...basically the whole shelf. Then slap it with flat black with red faced rims for kicks!

Ed, You can't go wrong with Short on the job. Honestly, if I lived in the states, I'd be knocking down Short's door to start a business and REALLY do this stuff. Problem is, the Alfa market is thin on these extremes and it's a shame. This is not SA.

Stew on it for a bit?? Since when do you need more than 5 minutes to see what most don't and pull concepts out like rabbit ears?? I've been studying your style within all those emails and I'll have you know, I'm closing in on your mind-set.

I agree the rear is far more appealing. But at the same time, much of everything else cannot escape a serious revamp to bring it into 2009/10. The Milano is such a tall car and I think I'd start there first for a vast improvement. Also, shortening the overall car would help greatly in tightening it up. It just depends how far you want to take things. I could go on and on.

The platform does hold so much potential. But I can't see many liking what I would come up with. So far my favorite is the futuristic draft and the reason I've not done anything else since.

At least I didn't go here (pic below) and dare call this a Milano. But Alfa did. Isn't this just a larger MiTo? Right there is the reason I just can't get down with Mercedes - not enough distinction between their models.

Ok. That's a bit better. But that orange is making my skin crawl!! Still, it's got a bit more attitude, but needs new lines in the lower profile badly. The challenge here is keeping the car recognizable but pushing it forward.

What can I say? To me, a car has good look as good as it runs. My father used to take me snow drifting as a kid as young as 8 and teach me car control in a slippery parking lot late at night a lot. Actually, I begged him to after the first time! Anyway, I remember him saying to my, "Lil' Bro, once you learn to control a car in any situation, never forget what you look like from the outside." By that, he meant, you can look even better at what you're doing, when you know what you're doing, by visually representing who YOU are.
