Please help, cooling fan doesnt work

The relay isnt connectiing the white ground wire (terminal 87 on the fan relay) to anything. The wire betweeen the fan plug and the relay socket is good, but when i put everything together and check it, the ground isnt connected to anything. Im really not good at figuring stuff like this out, can anyone help?

check that the ground wire did not just pop out of the relay sockit.

or is this the ground on the fan?

From where the ground wire comes out of the relay to where it plugs into the fan is fine, somwhere before it gets to the relay it seems to have a bad connection somewhere. The fan will come on if i hot wire it to the battery, but if i check the resistance of the grond side with everything hooked up, it doesnt appear to be grounded to anything. I tried switching the replay with the other one next to it, but that didnt do anything, so I think its something with the wires going in to the relay.

Well, it decided to work again now... I guess all i can do it just keep driving it, of course the fan always quits when i just got off the freeway and am sitting at a traffic light so i cant pull off the road right away.

Check the ground where the fan itself grounds to the chassis, should be right behind the driver's side head lamp. I've had that one fail on me from corrosion over the years. Cleaned it up and it's been working since.

If you're not seeing any resistance from the ground on the relay, you have to follow the wire and see what the problem is.

I will check the grounds again, I cleaned all the gounds under the hood (and added a couple of extra ground straps) a while ago and it seemed to get rid of the humming noise and smell of hot wiring when the headlights were on for a while. I think this time it may have been something else because the relay was clicking on and off, but the ground wire (at the fan plug) didnt appear to be connecting to anything, but when i checked the resistance of the white wire between the fan plug and the relay socket it seemed ok. I just want to figure out whats going on, becasue this is the 3rd time the fan hasnt been working right, and i dont want to end up with a blown headgasket from it getting too hot (of course it usually does it when im somewhere i cant pull off the road right away).

my verde had overheat problem every spring - i finally learned to pull the connectors off the temp senders, clean the terminals (both sides as best i could), plug back in and everything would be fine for another year. worth a try.
good luck
andy
