Hello Rich, I apologize for crashing your inbox, but I'm in need of some advice. Given your status as a senior member and the assistance you've provided on the forum to others, I thought you'd be a good person with whom to begin.

I've been a GTV aficionado for quite some time, and am finally in a position to be able to acquire one. The problem - I've come across countless examples over the years, and am unsure about the one that has currently captured my attention. I'm not a mechanic (or even mechanically inclined), so owning an Alfa might be a huge mistake given some of the posts I've read on the BB. I'm simply an automotive enthusiast who loves to drive, and I happen to love the early 70's GTVs.

The one that I'm exploring was very recently on Ebay. It's a '71 1750 that was relisted after failing to meet reserve. The second listing ended this morning after once again failing to meet reserve. Its description is not particularly thorough, and the seller should have posted more and larger pics IMO, but the car looks decent enough. Therein lies another problem - it "looks" okay in a series of online pics, but I'd want to be absolutely assured that I'm not being taken before making such a large investment.

Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps I should be posting this appeal on the BB, but I wasn't sure about the appropriate category.

BTW, GP happens to be my hometown. I'm across the state in Saint Joseph now.

    Thanks!

Sure can. But the reality is that the internal parts are kind of the easy part. It is the case that's the hard part...

I just saw that you can buy a new burman box - around $600 bucks. I can look it up if you are interested.

    Rich,
If the internals are the same could I find any Burman box and have it rebuilt using the shaft and sleeve from my box (provided the parts are usable)? I'd much prefer a rebuilt known-good box to a used, warn box.
