The books are still available with the exception of the Fiat 500 one (my wife is keeping). Price reduced to $90.00; I'll need your name and address. My Paypal account is RNO94@aol.com. Please confirm, thanks.

Thanks. Goes away when warm, but when cold smokes out the neighborhood. Plus, it appears there may be no thermostat or a dead thermostat - takes an inordinate amount of time to warm up and tem gauge goes up or down depending on going up or down the mountains. Ordered a thermostat, will swap ASAP and will yank off valve cover to see if exhaust valve stem seal is cracked or such. Again, thanks for the tip on where to get seals and instructions. I've replaced seals but only after pulling the head. I'm really interested to see how he does this without pulling the head or using compressed air to hold the valve up after you take the spring off. But the camshaft does not need to come off? I'm intrigued by this . . . :-)

I usually just pull the fuel lines. Only takes a few cranks on the starter to purge them, and I like the extra room, especially when getting the comp tester in. 7f this am, my 240D was not happy about starting, but it started...

Hi, yeh you're a bit too far away or I'd say bring it over and we'll figure it out. The best forum for old benz diesels is peachparts.com I'm active on there, tons of good guides. Smoke color and smell can be the best indicator. If it smells like burnt oil, then you know it's either valve or ring related. If it smells like diesel, then it's likely an injector issue. First diagnosis step for either though is a valve adjustment followed by a compression test. Mine had a broken valve guide, and it was very apparent in the compression, that cyl was 100lbs below every other cyl. Even though many folks don't like him (I do), Kent Bergstrom at Mercedessource.com sells a valve seal replacement kit with step by step instructions. Caveat is, if the guide is worn, replacing the seal won't help for long. Don't mention Kent or mercedessource on the peachparts forum or you'll get flamed . Good luck, let me know how it goes.
