October Events

Alfisti,

I hope that all of you are ready for the great events planned this coming weekend. Our annual Hampton Roads Alfa Weekend sure looks like it will be a great time! Apparently, the weather will be nice (according to the weather-witches and cloud-bos'ns anyway). Our display at the Colonial Italian American Organization Festival to be held at the Williamsburg Winery is now going to be held on dry, paved ground as opposed to a grassy field, so we should have no problem getting even those cars with the most minimal ground clearance (like Jim's Maserati!) into the display area. It sounds like we will have a great turnout and I believe that there will be some really nice cars coming including Joe Doudera's newly-restored 1958 Giulietta Spider, a Ferrari Dino 246, a Ferrari BB512 Boxer, Jim Salerno's newly-restored Maserati Merak, and perhaps even a few surprises! For those of you who will display your cars, please remember that we also need some cars to be there on Sunday. So, after we do our Sunday fun drive, we'll head back over to the festival. For information, please go to http://members.cavtel.net/rtriebwasser/HR%20Weekend.htm. There, you will find the details about all the weekends events.

On another note, the following weekend will be a combined MAARC event, which will be at the Vintage races at VIR, with a car show and a MAARC picnic as well. This event replaces the Extravaganza that was to be held last month in Winston-Salem. VIR is located near Danville, VA and is about a four hour drive from the Tidewater area. For directions and information, please visit www.mapquest.com and type in directions from your home to Virginia International Raceway
1245 Pine Tree Road, Alton Virginia 24520. Here are the details, as sent by Bruce Sharer of MAARCs Raleigh/ Durham branch:

Alfa Extravaganza at VIR on October 16th:

OK, so we were scared off by Ivan and the forecasts of rain and winds. Plan B is to combine the Extravaganza with the SVRA Fall Vintage races and 2004 Randall Yow Gallery Car Show at VIR Saturday morning October 16th.

The car show begins at 8 am and runs to 11:30 am when awards will be made. This event is open to all makes and models of cars. MAARC will participate in the show, but will also conduct our own concours as usual - a bit like the European Car Festival previously held in Winston-Salem.

MAARC will be providing a gourmet picnic lunch for members and family. Please let Bruce Sharer at RBSHARER@aol.com know if you are coming so there will be plenty of food.

The only catch to this event is that it costs $20 to get into the track, since it is a vintage race event. Of course you can spend as much time as you want viewing the races. There is also an optional $5 fee to enter the Gallery Car Show (there is no charge for the MAARC concours). Included with the $5.00 fee is an opportunity to drive on one of the VIR courses, the Patriot course, from 1 pm until 4:30 pm. If you are interested, you can get a 3-day race pass for $30 (Friday-Sunday).

Directions to the VIR and the car show are as follows. From wherever you are, head West on highway 58 through Emporia, South Hill, etc. towards South Boston and then head South on VA 62. Go south into NC, where the road becomes NC 57. Go through Milton, don't blink, and take Race Track Road north. There is a large VIR sign on NC 57. Follow the signs to the main gate. The road to the track is Race Track Road which intersects with NC 57 just south east of Milton (57 is also called Semora Rd.).

You have to sign a release form at the gate, then go to the bottom of the hill and turn right to the main paddock area. There is a building where you can purchase the event tickets on the left. After securing a ticket, cross the bridge over the track and bear left up the hill towards the big barn. I'm told that there will be signs to the Gallery Car Show.

If you want to enter the car show, you will be directed where to park. If you are only interested in the MAARC concours and picnic, there will be a place to park as well.

And, as if that isn't enough...the very next weekend is 'Driver Days'! How about them apples? A whole month of Alfa fun! Please standby for more details about this harvest/ Halloween event.

Cheers,
