Great Robert!

Looks like a (partial) confirmation of the "modification" theory to me!

Now we also have to find out what the h#ck that gold paint is doing on your car!

In the mean time, those of you who have the above book "Le Zagato - Fulvia Sport - Junior Z" by Michele Marchiano might be familiar with this photo on page 57:

The car has always puzzeled me because I couldn't find any trace of it...

Now, am I mistaken or is this the same car?

To me, it is the same... the fender flares, non-original Alfa Grill, black door mirrors etc...

There is a significant difference visible in the rear track width but the photos are not necessarily from the same year.

Personally, I can't imagine that two people would modify a JZ in such an almost similar fashion...

Any other opinions?

Just found this picture of the first JZ (a prototype, possibly the same car as the one wearing the "EE" plates in other pictures) that was shown to the public at the 1969 Torino Motor Show, being crushed under the weight of the finalists of the "Miss Automobile Internazionale" contest.

Different door skins

Hello members,

And here are two pictures of JZ door skins that look different. They contain a recess just like the one Jack talked about earlier and they look like the door handle recess that can be seen on the pictures of the 1969 Style Auto article. They can be found on the website www.rareparts.nl. Might these be the original attachments for the first style of door handle? According to the website, these doors came from a original Junior Zagato stock.

Ciao, Olaf

Olaf,

the NOS Zagato parts that rareparts.nl have are mainly rejects from the (in this case early) production.

Would be an interesting door to own... I believe they exhibited it already at AMI in Houten last month.

There is a "connection" between rareparts.nl, (current) Zagato and Paul Koot, which explains how these parts ended up with them.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with the parts being rejects, most guys who are restoring their cars would gladly use these parts.

Hello Jack,

Thanks for the input and info. Interesting that these skins still carry the early style recess. I hadn't seen the way the early handles were attached before. Now I understand why these doorhandles were thought to be too weak to do the job. This doorhandle attachment seems flimsy.
And cutting the doorskin to fit the later style doorhandles would make these doors perfectly usefull.

Ciao, Olaf

cutout

Here's a pic of the passenger-side door pull cutout on my car (#15). It looks like it was done by hand (a fairly impatient hand, even) which seems to support the theory about early style door skins being modified to accommodate the later style door pull mechanism.

cheers,
Brian

My curiousity has been satisfied. Brian's door looks a lot like mine. Interesting photos of what the doors originally looked like posted by Olaf and Jack.

Must be this one (1600 group 4 now offered on ebay/italy):

Yes, they are going on the market with it.

It is also being offered as private treaty sale and it is indeed the same car.

A long standing mystery (to me at least) has been solved!

I am waiting for the owners to supply the palmares so that we can fill in its (racing) history.

This must be THE most succesful racing JZ in its days so definitely a car worth owning eventhough its practical use is very limited.

It is 1600 # 025:
Alfa Romeo Zagato Register & Information Site

@ Robert & Brian
Thank you gentlemen for providing the photos!

Also to me this confirms the "modification" theory. Next step would be to try & find out how many cars were modified in this way... will be a lot harder I fear....

He guys, good to see you’r getting the story together.

Today I was at a Ferrari workshop were the new owner collected his 1950 Ferrari GP Monoposto. I had the opportunity to see a 330 bodied by Zagato which had the exact same door handles as the production version of the JZ’s. This is the first non JZ were I have seen the same door handles mounted on.

So far my contribution to this topic.

Cheers, Gerrit

Ola Gerrit,

Must ben S/N 10659 then...

Source: Michael Sheehan's ferraris-online.com

Based on a 1967 330 GTC Coupe. Was rebodied by Zagato in 1974 for Luigi Chinetti.

I presume the doorhandles were conveniently available at that time.

To me it is also the only other model with these doorhandles.

Hello Gerrit,

Welcome to the Bulletin Board! Nice to see you here and thanks for the input. I met the owner of this Zagato at the book- and modelshop 'Autoland' in Hilversum, Holland two years ago. Great stories! His car was standing in front of the shop. I wonder whether the spider version has the same doorhandles! The Lancia Fulvia Sport (Zagato) certainly did (later versions).

Ciao, Olaf

The spider version of the Ferrari did indeed use the handles, only the 1600 version of the Fulvia used the Jr Z handles. The 1300 version used the standard coupe handles. Does anyone know for which car the original handles were designed?

Both the 1970 Cadillac NART Zagato and 1972 Fiat 132 Aster Zagato used the same door handles as well... maybe there are even more models which did...
