John,

Both the 1750 & 2000 engine are equally high and with the stock air filter housing won't fit under the bonnet of a JZ.

I had a special adapter plate machined that screws into place on the stock aluminum bottom part of the filter housing and have two rectagular Sprint filters on top of that which fits nicely.

I have heard stories about some kind of Alfetta filter that might fit but never got the details about that.

Pictures of today's tour through the South West of Holland

Hello members,

We made an nice tour through the South West of Holland today. We past through the pot plants and flower area and made a stop at the 'Maeslant barrier' west of Rotterdam that stops high water from flowing into the harbour.
The quality of the pictures is not as usual because these were made with my cellphone. Sorry!

Ciao, Olaf

Nice pics anyway, cellphones are all right for snapshots with low resolutions mend for the web. The cars show the dilemma of choosing a square or a rectangular license plate. Which one do you prefer Olaf? On the Giulia GTV we are used to see square plates but the Z seems to have a planned area between the tail lights for a rectangular plate.

Hello Lars,

In fact there are two dilemma's First of all square of rectangular. I have seen early JZ's both with square and rectangular plates.

My car came to Holland in 1980 with the rectanguar licenseplate as shown in the picture (GL-61-VN). We don't know what kind of licenseplate it had in Rome (Roma K61254). I opted for keeping the plates as they are. Square yellow plates would have been allowed also. There are original JZ's imported in Holland in the early seventies with rectangular and square plates. Have a look at the pictures.

Second of all there is a choice between colours. Untill 1977, all the Dutch plates were 'old blue' in colour. From then on, all are yellow. However; you can opt for a special 'classic' licensenumber for cars that were imported into Holland in 1978 or later, but that were built before 1978. These licensenumbers allow the plates to be 'old blue' in square or rectangular form. Examples are '24-YA-06', 'AL-56-48', 'DL-56-12' and 'AE-37-84'.
The other option is a 'modern' licensenumber (1978 and later) that automatically means your plates are yellow. As my car was imported in 1980 it has the yellow plates. I opted to keep it that way to keep the identity of the car intact. I could opt for a classic licensenumber and the 'old blue' plates but then I would lose the licensenumber GL-61-VN.

Ciao, Olaf

Thanks Olaf
We have the same discussions here in Denmark right now because we are shifting to the new "ugly" EU license plates now with the blue mark to the left with the EU stars. This plate looks out of place on a classic car, however we can still order the old one. Our classic beautiful black plate is only for cars registrated before 1958 but after pressure from classic car organisations new timelines are under way meaning black plates for all cars registrated before 76 - this chould be in place after 2011 but we doubt it will come that quick.

You did not comment on what plate suits the back of the Z best! I love the square plates but on the Z it seems a little strange not to place the plate in the designed area. Zagato must have had some kind of idea with the retracted area but on the other hand, I do not think the Italian car designers paid attention to other countries large license plates. At least it looks quite strange to place a large rectangular plate under the left front bumper on a Duetto or a Giulietta.

I love the small Italian front plates - who don't.

Hello Lars,

I would think that Zagato made the recessed area in the back especially for the licenseplate. But the early cars already had square and rectangular plates. The square plates need a special bracket and extra holes in the back to fit. I do not have a preference. I like both forms.

Ciao, Olaf

My car came from the Netherlands with a big, square, dark blue plate attached to the back. I think they are the same size than classic black Italina plates (My car was an Italian delivery car).

When I had the back panel repainted, I opted to fill in all license plate holes in the back panel for the cleanest look. My license plate is attached to the inside of the rear window with suction cups ...

Though, the car came with a rectangular license plate attachment piece, probably from the factory. It attaches in the recessed part of the rear panel, might be around 4" by 2.5", is think black plastic and open to one of the larger sides.

The JZ was designed with the Italian market in mind and at that time all Italian rear plates were rectangular...

The cars originally come with a black plastic part that fills the recessed area to a flat, vertical, plane on which the plate was mounted and finished off with stainless steel trim, like in the pictures of 40-16-ZS and 53-39-UR and is probably the same part that Mike is talking about.

This is not uncommon as most Alfa's with a recessed rear side had such a plastic part (i.e. the Berlina and probably more).

It is shown in table 118 of the parts list:

Partnumber: 105.93.59.038.00/01 indicating that it is a JZ specific part (hence difficult to find). Proper Italian name: Supporto cornice targa.

BTW, there is a third variety of Dutch plates which was rather short lived and only valid for cars which got a Dutch license between 1976 and 1978... it is called light blue and is actually a couple of shades lighter than "old blue". It can still be ordered as such from specialist licenseplate manufacturers in The Netherlands.
