John,
I have two reasons for contacting you, the first being that you requested to know in post 349, the chassis number of the Lightweight with the Bertone number 77500. Its my car, chassis number *04700* the ex Jean Rolland Lightweight.
The second reason for contacting you is the fact that the top of the "picture frame" in front of the radiator has been removed and an SZ type bar has replaced it. I suspect it was to obtain a lower nose profile but as yet I have not been able to get the car into a proper position to measure this accurately. Certainly not as severe as the Pace car but I have no clear idea who did the work. Rolland entered the car in events under the description "Conrero Special" but as far as I know Conrero did no bodywork. Did he sub it out to someone in Milan at the time...who knows. Any ideas?
regards

The colour of the Consten/ de Lageneste car 207 in the Coupe des Alpes was clear grey, not metallic, and not white and not sky blue. These are the words of de Lageneste when met by Antoine Kohler at Expo Geneva Classics in October 2007 and he should know! With credit to Antoine for passing on this information.

Best to all

Stu

You know I don't know much about Alfa's well that might be about to change!

I've currently got an SVZ in the garage.
It belongs to a Portuguese friend, who had left it with Paul Grant (garage Vanderveken, friend of Mr Olczyk) for sale - but they fell out (probably inevitably!), Rodrigo the owner is going to finish and race one of our cars and we get to play with the Alfa.

My understanding of the car's history is as follows:
Chassis no. 1493-04045
Built 1st March 1957 as a Giulietta.
Swiss owner had it rebodied as an SVZ in July 1960, incorporating all the best features - double bubble, covered headlights, round wheel arches.
Imported into Italy in July 1975, passed through several owners until early 2000s when Rodrigo bought it and has since used it for road rallys.
I've only had a quick look at it but the nose shows signs of being repaired, the rest looks pretty old/unmodified to me.

It is currently fitted with a larger engine, and a very loud side exhaust, but also has a 1300 engine apparently.
I'm going to fit a normal exhaust system so that we can get it on the road, then I can start to sort out the niggling problems - slow wipers, really slow indicators, wing mirror that won't stay in place and iron out some of the (many) bumps in the bodywork - it even got thumped on the rear flank when it was being brought to Belgium from Portugal!
Once I've done that I'll see about the engine - I did see that someone in England produces FIA spec. engines for a reasonable price.

What I'm wondering is what the correct spec. engine would be - should it have sand cast DCO Webers, fancy sump etc. (is that what a 750 series engine means?) or is the later engine with DCOEs etc appropriate (which is what the guy in England offers)?
And what gearbox, it currently has 5 speeds, is that right?

As I've said I don't know much about these, so anything you can tell me about them would be really appreciated.

Best wishes
Peter
