Oil for a SS

Hi All,

I just got some replacement oil filters for my Gulia SS. The manuel says to use Shell or Agip 20w 40. I can't seem to find that anywhere. Does anybody know where to buy this oil? If not, what do you use?

The choice is up to you. Try reading the threads posted on the BB about oil. Check in the Guilia / Giulietta section. Check in the engine building section. These are "flat tappet" engines and require a zinc additive that is becoming scarce in conventional oils. There are tables listing the % zinc in various common oils. Most users of these older engines prefer a 20-50 oil these days. Much of the information here in the BB is in the form of older posts, and by reading these, you will learn more than just asking for individual recommendations. WELCOME TO THE BB! Keep asking questions!

In my Giulietta SS I use and wholeheartedly recommend Brad Penn 20w50 (Welcome!), specifically formulated for older cars with lots of zinc and detergents. Racing oils like Valvoline VR1 have the zinc but lack the detergents.

SSs of course use more speciale oil than other Giuliettas.

edit - forgot to mention that we use Brad Penn in our old racing Ferrari, and I will use in my SS, once restored.

Thanks. Another helpful advantage of Brad Penn (with which I have no connection) is that the green color makes it possible to distinguish engine leakage from transmission leakage.

Hope that beautiful two-tone SS will be finished in time to appear at the 100 years of Alfa convention next June.

I wish! I just sold the car in my avatar, so I now have Alfa restoration money. The one thing I am not is fast when it comes to restorations. I will be at the 100th ann. gathering SS info since it is in my neck of the woods. Hope to meet you and see your gorgeous car. The occasion wil be great for me to do research and take lots of pics to assist my own resto.

Interesting move from a QM to an SS. Perhaps the Alfa will prove to be less time consuming. As modern cars become ever bigger and faster, the joys of a Giulietta seem to grow in comparison with my previous 330 GT.

Unfortunately it seems that the Alfa club's 100th conflicts with La Belle Macchine d'Italia at Pocono, with the concorso for both events on Saturday. Might be a tough choice.
