More on the Z - Rubber/ seal between grille and body

Gents,

Now I am looking for the rubber/ seal that goes between the stainless front grill and the body. Actually, two questions:
  • I am still unclear if the Junior Z originally had a seal there: Period advertising photos seem to indicate there was none
  • Most restored cars do have one there - A fellow owner installed a self-adhesive seal, borrowed from Toyota. What do you use?
And yes, I am doing some minor beautification work on the car and discover that I still know next to nothing on it :-)

Best,

Mike

Seal

Hi Mike,

I used a small universal u-shaped rubber during the restoration of my Z. It can be obtained from a shop is that is specialised in rubber seals and fixtures for classic cars.

Ciao, Olaf

Correct, originally there was none but nowadays most people use the small profile that can be obtained from specialists that deal in that kind of stuff. I obtained it at a car show where I happened to come across it.

Thanks for that. Olaf, your pic prompts another question: What is the hardware you are using to screw on the grille that goes on the bottom of grill/ front?

I think originally, the screws were very similar than the ones on your car, with a flat, big round nut-like mechanism. My car has some plain screws only and I would like to get hardware that more resembles what you have.

Thanks, experts.

Mike

I don't think that it is indisputable that there was originally no seal between the cover and the body. I agree that the period photos show that there was no seal on the stainless frame; but note in the photos below that (on this car, at least) there is a seal that mounts onto the body, both around the side and upper perimeter of the frame, and also on the removable horizontal piece that slides in below the headlights (not shown in Olaf's photo). The seal is discretely hidden by the frame, which may explain why none is visible in period photos. The absence of any seal here would allow rain to flow down behind the frame, which I would imagine would have led to alot of nuisance cleaning (for people who drove Jr Zs in the rain and still liked a clean looking car). If I had to, I would guess that there was originally a seal there.

In response to Mike's questions about the screws, as well as the spacer material I'm attaching some pictures that show both the thumb nuts as well as the material that the previous owner of my Jr. Z placed between the stainless and the body. Mike, I know that my screws are too long (at least, that's what 'she' said!!)
Jason - I also have horizontal and vertical molding installed on the "grille" pieces behind the perspex though some molding is missing.
Hope this helps.

Good point, Jason and thanks for the pics. They show the opposite alternative: Olaf fixed the seal to the grille, then onto the car, your pics show a different seal fixed onto the car.

I seem to recall though that there was some complaining in period on the Junior Z front assembly as always being foggy.

Thanks all for this. Really appreciated.

Mike

Gordy, thanks. Posted the same time than you.

THese are the same nuts (Big and round head) that were used on the Lancia front grilles (To access the battery tray). See, I did not even know that the screw goes in from the "inside" down: Mine are simple screws that are screwed in from the "outside" up ... Things to fix now.

Hi Mike (et al)-

Do you have a source for those nuts? I've looked here and there over the past few years but haven't found any that are the same as the remaining one I have (which appears to be brass or bronze, the benefit of which is corrosion resistance; I guess stainless would be a good alternative). Butterfly nuts work just as well, but don't look quite right. I'd love to replace the missing ones and maybe have a spare in hand...

Thanks-
jason

In the same vein...

I'd like to find a source for the screws onto which the nuts are placed. As I earlier indicated, my screws are too long, which in some circles in not a defect, but in this case, I would like some that are "just right".
(wink, and grin!!)

I believe they are Zagato-specific... zinced steel.

Bought the last remaining handfull NOS from Galbiati years ago and gave most away to JZ owners in dire need for these. Have 2 left for my blue JZ...

Hardware on the bottom of the grille

Hello Mike,

The big round nuts that retain the bottom of the grille (4 in total) came with the car when I bought it in 2003. During restoration, we changed the screws that were heavily corroded, for units that were just as long. The picture shows the original corroded screws. We retained the nuts. They seem like a brass/bronze material and I haven't seen nuts like this in the past few years. Wouldn't know where to get them, sorry!

On the seal around the grille, I had some sort of non-original seal behind the grille on the body when we removed the stainless steel parts. It trapped water which didn't seem right to me. That's why I opted for the solution with the seal around the stainless steel parts.

Ciao! Olaf

Gee, Jack, you've got all the goodies! Looks like, since you've got the last remaining NOS supply, you'll have to 'pony up' for the re-production. Good to know, at least, that I shouldn't be wasting my time looking for the 'correct' ones.

Gordy, I'll measure the remaining (original looking) screw (at some point the others were replaced with US-size screws) and post.

-jason

postscript:
Gordy-
I measured: 4 screws, 4 lengths. Oh well. They are all flat-headed, slotted screws, size 4M, with something between 0 and two nuts. If I had to guess, I'd say the one that 'looks' right is about 3/4" long.

The nuts for the stainless might be Zagato specific, but there is hope.
you can buy a similar nut in Stainless steel, galvanised or yellow cupper
The DIN number is 466 and than you get a nut that looks like this
Kartelmoer M4 RVS.pdf
I can order them down the street at our local Fabory shop.
Stainless will cost me 2,75 Euro each, excl VAT with a minimum of 25.
Galvanized ones 0,63 Euro each, excl VAT with a minimum of 50.
This is for M4 nuts. Delivery time app. 3 days.
I'm thinking of ordering a box of galvanized ones, but than I'm stuck with 46 nuts which I'll never use again.

That one will do fine Don!

I'll bet you there are plenty of JZ owners yearning for these!
