Question Identification Engine Parts 6C 1750

Hello, my Name is Tobias, i´m from Germany near Wiesbaden and i found something, that might be interesting for you.
Some years ago, i received some parts from a workshop resolution.
There were many british parts (MG, Morris, etc.), except these one.
I got no result, where these parts could belong to, looking for english models, so i gave it up.
Last week i cleaned up a bit and came back to the parts.

From a engine reconditioner i got the information, that it might be from an alfa romeo 6c.

I found one picture with conrods of a 6c, they looked similar to my.
At the alfa forum of Germany, i got the tip, that this forum is a tarnish point for early alfa models.

I´ve got some pictures, where you can see the parts. The bore is 65mm
There are 2 sets of pistons, 1 set conrods, gears, bearings, etc.

My question is, to which model do these parts belong?

I'm not an expert on prewar engines but I did a quick lookup of information that may be useful to you.

AFAIK, the only Alfa production engines that used 65 mm bore (and 88 mm stroke) were indeed the 1929-33 6C 1750 models, often referred to as 3rd to 5th series Alfas. Depending on engine features, manufacturing year and possibly destination market, these cars used several names (Turismo, Sport, Gran Turismo, Super Sport, Gran Sport) but, generally speaking, they had 3 engine types: Single overhead camshaft, dual overhead camshaft without supercharger, and dual overhead camshaft with supercharger (compressor).

I included some production data from Fusi's book as well as some pages from a parts catalog for reference. One thing worth noting that may cast some doubt onto whether or not these are Alfa parts is that the pistons shown in the parts catalog show rings above and below the pin. I hope experts will soon chime in and share their knowledge.

Thank you tubut for the data sheets! The grey pistons had already been to an piston manufaturer "Kolben Wahl" for reconditioning, that shows a mark on the pistons. Maybe they are an improved version.

Hallo Tobias, I will be back home end of the week and can check with my 1929 6C piston and conrods if they look similar. Do you own a 6C ?

Dear Tobias,

you definitely have Alfa 6C 1750 pistons for a non- compressor engine. I attach pictures of pistons and big-end bearing caps taken when we were dismantling a worn out Turismo engine. The certainly were not the first, factory pistons, but you see that the conrods are quite the same, as is the piston design. The problem is, that no serious engine shop will normally re-use this type of connecting rods with an open smell end for the gudgeon pin (Kolbenbolzen), as they are likely to break or shear off and destroy the block. The same gies for the pistons. Wahl Spezialkolben is an excellent supplier for pistons made to order, and they really know their job. If somebody is going to do a 1750 engine properly, he will have his conrods made with a closed small end and have his pistons made to his requirements. So, I am afraid that your parts are more of decorative value except, by unlikely coincidence, somebody needs exactly your design. Thank you for sharing with us your find.
Yes, these are 6C components, probably from a 1750 GT, 1930 ish.
Sadly, you own them for a very good reason !!!
I have been associated with vintage Alfa Romeos for many years. I have rebuilt examples of both the 1500s and 1750s during this time. On every occasion that I have completed a rebuild I have cast these parts aside and replaced them with new stronger and lighter components. In particular the rods should be replaced with Corello units and the pistons with those obtainable from the USA (sorry, can't remember brand). The 1750 engine has weaknesses in the little end of the conrod and poor lubrication to number 6 rod.
It's a shame; many Alfa Romeo owners also have sets like this lying redundant. Perhaps give them to a museum ?
If you require any photographs of the engine in pieces then I can probably help you out.
