8C 2311229 in Australia

I thought I'd repost in this forum as I didnt get much response from my thread in the Picture Forum.
Alfa Romeo 8C 2311229

Alfa Romeo 8C 2311229

OK, so I was wondering if anyone has more info on this 8C 2300 that is on display at the Alfa dealership here in Brisbane, Australia.
I googled its chassis number and there was talk about it having a cadillac engine at some stage Then there is debate that says that chassis is still in the US
Dretceterini seems to be have been involved in the discussion on another forum. Perhaps he could chip in.

Anyway it is a beautiful car so I thought I'd post a few pics.

Hi Derek,

this car is recorded to be delivered as a Drophead Coupe, propably built by Castagna on a long chassis.

The first engine #2311229 is now in chassis #2211092.

Simon Moore thinks that Gil Schick replaced the original engine by a Mercury V8 in the early 50ies.
The Mercury V8 was later replaced by a Cadillac V8.
During this period, Schick ordered a special race car body for the car, made by Adolf Deutsch.
The car was seen for the last time in 1958, what happened from then on is not confirmed.

The engine number of the car on the photos could get interesting...
Further where the Le Mans style body comes from.....

One remark of the last eye-witness was, that not much of an Alfa was remaining in the car in 1958

Best regards
Ciao Carlo

Thanksc Carlo,
These cars do get confusing for me. I guess a lot can happen in 70-80 years and there is no one to remember first hand.

Here are a couple more pics.

AR8C2311229 engine in AR8C2211092

Last known, engine 8C2311229 was residing in chassis AR8C2211092 and a 4-seater "LeMans" body was made in England for it just a few years ago for a UK dealer. Looks lovely!

AR8C2311229 also lovely

Saw it at Pebble and thought it was actually rather too nice for the old beat-up race car that it was. History dictates that we get to have what is left of a car when all the previous players are done with their use and abuse. It is great that this car still exists in any form!

The nightmare that is the USA 2311229

According to November 2005 Classic and sportscar 8c 2311229 is owned by some Arizona "good ol boys" who enjoy freaking out the concours crowd with its Cadillac engine and Halibrand indy style wheels. The good ol boy owners claim "It's great fun to drive and handles a bit like our 700bhp sprint car on dirt". I find it sad that the current owners prefer it as a Hot rod. Everyone is different, but to my mind the history of this car is precious and the blatant lack of concern for it's early life is just plain crass and ignorant. The statement that it handles like a dirt track car shows that clearly any shred of Alfa character has been removed by the weight of that silly cadicrap lump and the wide front tires on heavy thick solid wheels. Actually I would hazard a guess that a well tuned Alfa 8c supercharged motor would put out more power than a 1950's cadilliac v8.

The car became the Keenan Wynn/Bamford car back just after WW2, so it has a long racing history "in period". At least that's better than a lot of similar cars...although I rather see it put back as closely to the day it was built as possible...
