Alfa 6c2300B/T256(?) at Gooding aucton

The car was S/N 815092, motor 824048. The car was unrestored, and the motor in the car was not the original one, although it was supplied with the car.

I have a list of all 19 Tipo 256s given to me by Calligaris, the technical specialist for the Alfa 6c2500 register, and this car is not on the list. All the cars on the list he gave me have a S/N starting with 9; not 8.

This car has the 3 carb rather than the 2 carb intake, and may be 2500cc and not 2300cc. The person selling it had it for something like 42 years.

Last year an almost identical restored black car with the 3 carb manifold (don't have the S/N, sorry) sold for $2.6M.

I wasn't at the auction on Sunday, but was told this unrestored car was bid up to over $3M, and was not sold.

Unfortunately, the Alfa archives have very little on the 6c2300 "A"s or 6c2300Bs, so there is no way to confirm if this is a Tipo 256 or not.

I know absolutely nothing about these pre/ just post war Alfas, but I had a feeling the supplementary lights were actually `moulded` into the bodywork whereas these seem to be completely independent of the wings. Any thoughts?

Depends on the particular car. There are slight coachwork differences from car to car, even among the 6c2300B MMs with coupe coachwork by Touring. According to Fusi, a total 106 6c2300B MMs were built.

T256? No way.

Gooding & Co describes this car in their catalogue as 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 B Mille Miglia, no more no less. Estimate price was $1,5-2,0M, and reserve not meet with high bid $1,3M. Another prewar Alfa (8c 2300 Castagna) sold for $4,180,000.

I thought my friend was wrong when he said the car was bid up to $3.8M and was a no sale.

As to why it might be a Tipo 256, the 6c2300B MM should only have 2 carbs; not 3. This car and the almost identical restored car last year both had 3 carbs??!!

There was a transition phase from the 6c2300B MM to the Tipo 256, as the 6c2500s were first shown in Berlin in 1938. I am not absolutely certain if this car and last years black car are Tipo 256s or not...

Thanks. Do you know if the 3 carburetor intake is original to the car?

Sorry but I can't help you with it. The car is listed on "The Italian Car Registry", perhaps John de Boer could clarify the original configuration of the engine.
