1929 Alfa 1750 SS 6C

Does anyone have any idea of the value of the 1929 Alfa 1750 SS 6C being offered by Family Classics ( FamilyClassicCars.com ) ? I searched this forum but could not find a discussion pertaining to this car.

The Alfa participated in the 1929, 1930 & 1931 MM. The car was originally a 6C SS so it has the original frame, motor (Supercharged 6 cylinder) transmission and rearend. The body was installed in 1936 to replicate the 8C shown at the Earls Court car show. The body was not installed by the factory but was done in Italy by another coachbuilder. The car was sold to Dr. Gearing in 1949 and taken to South Africa until Family Classics purchased it in 2008. The car runs and drives excellent and is in Events condition. It comes with a number of spares as well.

It is of value due to having participated in 3 Mille's but when it did the races it was not with the current body work. So do you value it as a 6C with racing history? Does the 8C body take away or increase the value of the car? At any rate it is a beautiful car.

Bonhams listed this car at its June 7 sale and described its racing history in very cautious terms and its description of the rebody also varies from the above. Assuming its a kosher supercharged ss with original drivetrain and frame it's still highly desirable , just dont pay for a racing history that may not exist or a body that, whilst attractive,is of uncertain origin and period inappropriate. Can anyone (ie John de B) help out with its history.

The car was a No Sale at Bonhams in Connecticut bit to $690k. The car doesn't have documentation to prove any involvement in the Mille. Mentioned in Hemmings Sports & Exotic magazine September 2009 page 88.

The car was a 'No Sale" at a bid of $875k

Russo & Steele, Monterey, CA August 14 -15, 2009

From 'Sports Car Market' magazine:

Description:

#S639 - 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Spider S/N 0312901 Odo: 53,920 km

Older paint with lots of cracking, chips and shrinkage. Used scruffy interior. delivered new to South Africa where it was campaigned. Lots of patina. Condition 3-

Comments: "Last seens at Bonhams & Butterfield's Greenwich sale in June '09 where it failed to sell at $680. Thought to be ex-Hugh Gearing, South African enthusiast. The history has some gaps and the car has major patina, but regardless, it will always be a pre-war supercharged Alfa. A bit more digging into its history should help the seller achieve a higher result."

It is the Ex-Hugh Gearing car & is a 6C 1750 SS, the numberplate is a South African number plate from Gauteng Province, (GP) and is where Hugh Gearing lived.

Interesting about the "Italian rebody" as the current body is thought to have been made in England, as one of the articles I've read on the car described it as "an English body approximating the ones on the 8C's"

It's a well known car in Alfa circles out here, along with the 6C 1750 Gran Sport Paris that was ex-Waldie Greyvenstein.

Sad that both have gone from our shores, I hope this one find an owner as sympathetic as the Paris.

Ciao
