Attention BC car buyers: HST NOT being eliminated!
I got word of this from the other club I belong to (The Vintage Car Club of Canada). Please read! I've also attached to this post the pdf. of the form letter to your local MLA:
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Provincial Government refuses to change everything back to 7 % PST, once the HST is withdrawn. The private sale of used vehicles is one of several areas affected.
The National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC) has taken a strong position on this topic. Our BC members want the tax on the private sale of used vehicles to remain the same as it was BEFORE the HST came into effect in British Columbia. At that time there was no GST(5%) applied to the private sale of a used vehicle, just the PST (7%) was charged. The provincial government plans to charge 12% tax on the private sale of used vehicles once the HST is withdrawn.
We do not feel it is fair and reasonable for the BC Government to refuse to adjust sales taxes back to what they were before the HST came into effect in BC.
The Government is not removing the GST on the private sale of used vehicles. Therefore, we view this as a "new tax". The public was not advised about this "new tax" before they were asked to vote on the withdrawal of the HST.
The NAACC feels that the Government has mislead the used car community and the collector car community by not informing the public BEFORE the vote to withdraw the HST was taken that the GST would not be rescinded for the private sale of used vehicles. In our opinion placing this "new tax" on the private sale of vehicles is both unfair and underhanded and completely unacceptable.
The NAACC is recommending that "ALL" collector car enthusiasts contact their MLA's and write to the Provincial government directly. The NAACC is putting a campaign into effect immediately. All clubs in BC are being notified now and hopefully we can provide enough pressure to convince the Government to do the right thing. Please use the "Attachment" above and contact your MLA immediately.
I urge you to contact your clubs and memberships in BC now.
My best to you all,
John Carlson
President/CEO
