Brake wear-in time

How long should it take before my brakes stop squealing? I removed the glaze from the new pads but the car still squeeks during braking. I tried using some pad adhesive but it wasn't much better. I have only put ~50 miles on the car since I installed everything.

I cna't say for my car yet - haven't had this problem yet, but in other cars I have used 'copperslip' (a copper based grease) to success to stop squeeling. Of course it could be the type of pads you are using. Matt

Bed in should take roughly 10-15 minutes, with most of that time being spent letting them cool down after the hard stops at 30, 50, 70 and whatever higher speed you want to get up to.

You can help things a little bit by (1) making sure the caliper pistons are aligned correctly and (2) beveling the leading edge of the pads to about a 30-40 degree angle with a width of approximately 3/16-1/4 inch by using a file.

You did have the rotors turned, or at least broke the glaze off them with some course sandpaper before installing the new pads, right?

I didn't sand the rotors, but they don't have a mirror finish yet. I guess I will try sanding down the one rotor that makes noise (front right tire) and filing the leading edge. The pads I am using are metallic carbon fiber.

Thanks for the help.

I just checked the caliper piston, and the raised areas are positioned in a 12 and 6 o'clock position. Ive read they are supposed to be facing the rotor. Whats the best way to move it?

See this page at IAP that has description, schematics, and DL~able templates to do it properly.

AFA actually turning them, if you're really, really lucky, you can turn them with your fingers.

If you're not, they can be gently grabbed with channel locks or the like but you must insulate the jaws so as not to make any scratches.

Some people forgo that method and use a screwdriver stuck through the hole that the shoes slip in and out of and lever the pistons around by getting up against the shoulder of the raised portion.
