Badge recess ?

On a '72 GTV 2000, would there have been a badge above the '2000' on the boot lid (trunk) ? ie would the boot have had a shallow recess in it ?

Have a look at the thread "Trunk badge location and C pillar" - I posted a few photos earlier this year when my car was stripped prior to being repainted.
Also, your badge may or may not be the Milano type - being a 1972, 2000GTV it is possibly the later badge. Just match the one that is on the front grille, they are both the same size (54mm I think). The only difference is that the rear badge does not have the two mounting lugs.

It is my understanding that some dont have the recess. My 1974 GTV 2000 does not have the recess. I think I have the original boot lid.

Rockies correct. Alfa fitted boot lids either with or without the recess. Of all the GTV I've seen, the lids without the recess are more common.

Alfa dropped the 'Milano' from the badge starting in 1972.

I dragged out the spare boot lid that I have in the shed (from a long gone white 2000GTV) and it has a badge recess. I 'phoned a friend' who has been restoring a late model 1600 Junior over a longish period of time and his boot lid also has a recess. Getting more interested in this I contacted two part suppliers who did me a favour and checked their current stock - one had no boot lids whereas the other had two labelled 1750 and 2000 respectively both of which had badge recesses. The second guy also had a 1750 Berlina boot lid with a recess. Why would Alfa do this? Certainly my Aussie experience leads me to believe the opposite of papajams. Maybe the Italians only marked the lids bound for downunda with recesses as they know how thick we are in Oz and how much help we need when restoring these interesting cars
I guess this kind of stuff is bound to happen when dealing with a manufacturer like Alfa on an international list. Just have to agree to disagree.
As to your problem Matt, measure twice and glue once ....

I think I contributed to the original thread mentioned previously.

From what I recall, the GTV's were supplied with the boot lids WITH recess, but the junior models recieved the flat lids WITHOUT. I don't know how this affects the earlier step front cars. Over time most seem to have been switched every which way.

Recess badge on boot lid....

The early GT's do not have recess on the boot lid, but the GTV's do come with a recess. Unsure if the North American GTV's have a recessed badge but I have an original unmolested GTV that I picked up in Italy which has the recess Alfa Romeo Milano badge located just above the number 2000 on the boot.

"Milano" disappeared from the badge of all cars when the Alfasud arrived in 1971/72, presumably Alfa didn't want to do another badge with "Napoli" on it for the 'Sud.

I prefer the "Milano" badge, especially the earlier enamel ones, they look so much more classy than the plastic ones.

Do you think that since the FIAT takeover of Alfa (and just about every other Italian carmaker) in the mid 1980s, the badge should now read 'Alfa Romeo Torino' ?

After all, Alfa did issue the famous 'Alfa Romeo Paris' badge in 1932 on cars bound for France, though I must admit 'Alfa Romeo Oz' just doesn't have a real romantic ring to it ....

Maybe not! All this "Mi.To" stuff makes me cringe a bit. Shows up the fact that modern Alfas are mostly Fiat parts.

I couldn't help noticing that both my 75s (built just after Fiat took over) have "Alfa Lancia SPA" on the chassis plates. I can only assume that the Alfa bosses were somewhat embarrassed by the Fiat association and decided that although being associated with Lancia might wash, putting "Fiat" on the cars was a step too far.

Some years ago I helped a friend remove the engine from his Dino 246GT. Whilst these cars were never badged as Ferraris, he was more than a little upset when he saw FIAT stamped on the iron block. He got over it pretty quickly when the car was running again.
