Unhappy Help! No Spark, Won't Start...

Well,

I'm going around and around with this one. My '71 GTV 1750 been in storage
for a few months. I went to start it. After a long crank it turned over and I took it for a spin. Next day I crank over again. no problem. Now it's dead in the water. I gave it a crank No spark, plenty of gas. So I replaced the coil and put in some new plugs. But when I crank it, and held the wire slightly away from the new coil. No spark jump. I'm about to replace the points and condenser. But It was working fine the other day. I'm getting fuel but no spark. I must be missing something real obvious. But what! Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark

Well since it was running before you replaced the points and coil, I would guess that is where the problem is. Double check your wiring to the coil, and points/condenser. Also check for power to the + terminal on the coil.

Check that the black wire from the coil to the distributor has a good connection to the spade terminal underneath the distributor base. Also be sure that the coil is installed the correct way.

If all the wiring is correct and you are getting no spark then yes, I would say you are due for new points and condenser.

Better yet, replace them with the Pertronix unit Ignitor or a Crane XR700 Alfa Romeo and Fiat Performance Ignition Systems and never worry about it again. I have both and I find they are especially useful if you have a SPICA system. They start way easier and all but eliminates the worry of flooding from over cranking.

Funny about the coil. I took it to Napa auto. They tested it on some funky device. Showed it was bad. So I got a new one. That didn't make a differance. I think it was some excess goo, or grease I found on "U" clips that attach in the condencer and points to the distrubuter. Or maybe the plug gap. When changed to .25 it fired up like a champ. I only wish I chould adjust the idle down a bit. I stays around 1500 when warmed up. It's also not to smooth when cold. But it runs out nice.
