Exhaust fumes in car

How severe does the turn-down of the tailpipe need to be to stop the fumes from getting sucked back into the car? I've attached the only on-hand picture of the back of my car.
I know I have a trunk seal issue because anything I put in the trunk comes out smelling really good. Maybe I can turn the trunk into a smoker and cook up some nice smoked turkey and ham!

I'd address the cause, a bad trunk seal, and not the symptom (adding a downturned tailpipe). GTVs were never fitted with a downturned pipe, only certain year Spiders were. However, a downturned pipe needs to exit into the airstream from underneath the car.

My 74 GTV was leaking around the taillight gaskets. I coated the gaskets with clear silicone and reinstalled, fixed the problem. Also check trunk seal, of course.

You might also want to check the fuel lines and reservoir or whatever you call that black plastic thing connected to the filler .
I still have some exhaust sneaking in, when the window is open, but a lot of the smell that I was getting was from gas fumes PLUS the exhaust.
My taillight gaskets are shot too..so I will probably have to silicone them..as soon as I can drag myself away from the Euro Cup.

Krib, the question I really wanted to ask was, "I have a smell in the cab, but I can't determine what the smell is?!" Is it raw fuel, exhaust fumes, or smells working their way through the firewall into the cab? Weird thing that you mentioned the filler because I looked at it and there is a tube coming out the the filler neck with nothing attached to it. This tube is in the compartment under the fuel door, not in the trunk. I can't seem to find any reference to it in any of the books I have.

I like to run with a carbon monoxide detector in the trunk. Raw fuel smells probably wont kill you but carbon monoxide will.

I was getting really strong exhaust and gas fumes in my GTV. I couldn't drive it anywhere that I would be amongst people because my clothes would stink so bad. My wife and I did a detailed search and found; 1) I was using an exhaust tip (chisel cut end) that is held on with set screws (not welded) the exhaust was actually blowing back towards the front of the car through the small gap between the tip and the tail pipe. Exhaust soot forward of the tip on the tail pipe was the evidence. 2) there was a pin hold exhaust leak at the weld ahead of the first muffler. Again, a streak of soot on the exhaust pipe was present. 3) the gas return line had a minor leak at the connection to the fuel tank. There was gas standing in the mounting channel inside the trunk. So, I had exhaust fumes and gas fumes inside the car.
Repaired the exhaust leaks with Permatex Exhaust System Sealant and replaced the short section of fuel line between the rigid tubing under tha car and the tank return inlet. As of now it appears that these remedies have solved the problem. On recent test drives.....NO EXHAUST/GAS SMELLS.
