Gas Filler Rubber Guard

I'm close to finishing the restoration of my 74 GTV. This afternoon I decided to put in the new rubber guard with the drain hole that fits on the gas filler neck. Two hours later, I'd lost half a fingernail and all of my patience, and it's not in. I'd left the piece in the hot sun on top of a car so that it would stretch more easily; it helped a little, but not enough.

Is there a sequence I'm missing?

Do I have to remove the gas tank again?

Can I cut the rubber guard into about five pieces, install them, and then glue them all together? I'm kidding.

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thanks, AL

I had the same problem

Hi Al,

I'm with you. My hands hurt for a week after trying to get the thing on.

Did you get yours from Reoriginals? I think they casting they sell is made of rubber that is too thick.

Here's a thread I started a while back:
Gas tank boot replacement

I still haven't gotten it all the way on.

yes this part is real PIA!

But i got it on. i first put the part in boiling water for a few mins and then quickly pop it on. It went on pretty easy. But be careful it will he HOT! The only other way i can think of getting it on is using a heat gun. heat the sucker up really nice and it should go on.

With out heat it is not going on.

Wink Rubber boot on gas filler neck

Matt,

Thanks very much. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who had trouble putting this on. I'm going to take a couple days rest and then put the boot in boiling water before putting it on. If it cools, I'll use the hair dryer trick. AL

Al - obviously don't use the hair dryer on this thing while it's in place, unless the gas tank is totally empty and devoid of gas fumes.

Some soapy water or watery soap should help it slide over the filler neck.

Al:

The sequence is:

1) Install the rubber piece

2) Install the gastank

3) Install the filler neck and re-connect it to the tank using a short section of fuel-resistant tubing + 2 hoseclamps (see photo)

Of course, this presumes that you have already sawed the filler neck off the tank. While you're at it, you can shorten the neck 1" or so, which allows most US gas station nozzles to actually fit our cars.

If you don't want to make this modification, then sure, use a heat gun, smear vaseline, lose fingernails, etc.

Installation of rubber boot at gas filler neck

I earlier said that to install my rubber boot at the gas filler neck, I'd use two suggestions by Alfabb members: 1) put the boot in very hot water and then install it; 2) if necessary later, use the hair dryer trick. Later it occurred to me that using a hair dryer with its electric motor and possible sparks is not something I probably want to do inches from the gas tank.

So, I'll submerge the boot in boiling water and moving quickly. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Al

Thanks for hair dryer advice.

Thanks for telling me not to use a hair drying near the tank; I did realize that, but thanks for the warning. AL
