Another GTV...YES, ANOTHER ONE!
Friday night I picked up a GTV. Most of you know it as Simon's (smestas) car. He really caught me off-guard with offering me this car. Do I need it?...NO! Do I have room for it?...NO F'ING WAY! Am I gonna make it nice again...HELL YES! Here are pictures of what I'm starting off with. For now it's going to sit on the trailer because I have absolutely no room for it. I'm going to finish up the GTA over the summer and then hope to begin with this one sometime in the fall. For now I'll slowly gather parts and think about if it's gonna become a race or street car. One thing for sure, it's staying AR501 red. Here are some picture of the car when I picked it up, infront of my house, and at it's current resting place.

Anthony, I don't recall....but did Simon post the car as for sale in the cars for sale forum? (I guess keeping the AlfaBB up and running takes up so much of Simon's time that he can't find the time to finish this car!).

Simon's Alfa-less again - shocking! Well at least the car's in really good hands.
Looking forward to seeing how you'll bring this car back to life, Anthony.
What are you doing to the GTA, by the way? I thought that it drives just fine, seeing you take it to shows and canyon runs everywhere - or is there another GTA other than the Stradale that I don't know about?

The car was never advertised for sale.

Simon will get another Alfa. Just give him some time.
I'm excited about this project. I want to make it stock looking from the outside (except wheels and ride height) and then go nuts on everything else...14x6.5 Montreal Turbina's, 10:4:1 Borgo pistons, port/polish head with matched intake, o/s intake valves, 11mm cams, GTA headers, Magnaflow exhaust, Aluminum flywheel, GTA gearbox, shimmed LSD, bigger front sway bar, Centerline springs, Koni shocks, etc..
As for the GTA, I'm removing the ingrated roll bar that was installed in the early 80's, redoing the interior, and installing an Autopower roll bar. We thought about turning it back to it's FIA / B Sedan Corsa set up from the 60's, but then it'd be another track only car (gutted interior and full cage). By keeping an interior in it, we can enjoy it on tours/rallys and track events.

Hmm, maybe Simon should buy a completed car Like a nice red 74 GTV from the Bay Area?

Anthony glad to hear you are going to full FIA group 2 rules on the GTA. Keep that baby pure. I would love to get a GTV strip it and put all the trick stuff on it with the goal of running with the others with tricked out stripped cars. In my GTA even the dome lights and horn works. Are you adding a radio I reread all the rules from the era and they required the full interior in 1966 Sedan racing not sure about the later years. I know by 1970 they were pretty stripped and very different than the early GTA's

Looks like we're taking a similar route with our GTV projects. Mine's going to get a similar suspension you mentioned (I'm taking off the bumpers), Momos, similar engine work, LSD, etc. I do have a few questions for you though:
GTA gearbox - I'm guessing this is a box with shorter ratios; know where I can get one, or if anybody can build me a similarly-ratioed box?
Shimmed LSD - mine's a stock LSD from a 2L car; how's "shimmed" different and better?
Are you using orange or yellow Konis? I had yellows previously on my '71 GTV, and boy were they stiff in the softest setting even!
Starting work on this right away?

On another note, Anthony, you mentioned "Centerline" springs... I used IAP springs in the past and was going that way again until you mentioned Centerline. Have you compared the two, and what are the plusses and minuses in your opinion? I did find that the IAP springs didn't let my GTV sit low enough, so I had to hack both ends a bit to bring it down to my taste.

Patrick, my GTV has Centerline springs (for ride height comparison). I haven't tried out the IAP ones, but really like the Centerlines.
and here it is (I think BEFORE the Centerlines were on it) next to my dad's 67 with Alfaholics Fast Road set up on it:

In the last photo, the height looks lower (without Centerline springs)! I'm using the distance between the top of the rear tire and wheel well, though it's hard to judge since the car's parked at a different angle...
Thanks for the pics, Ted. I do like the present stance of your car, so I'll probably go with Centerlines.

Really? Lower? hmm, definitely wouldn't be lower if it was taken with the stock springs...I keep looking at the pic and it must have been taken after I put them in and before the new tires...

Yes, the GTA gearbox has closer gear ratios than a standard box. Not sure where you can get one right now. I do sell a new gear set that is very close to it Alfa Stuff - Your Online Source for Alfa Romeo Speed Parts
When you shim a LSD, you add more clutch discs. A shimmed LSD will have a tighter lockout than a standard one. I'm planning on having it rebuilt so might as well add the extra discs while I have it apart.
I'm going with the orange just because there is no real need to go the extra mile with the yellows. I'm not trying to break any records with this car. It's going to be a fun street car.
I'm in the process of buying all the parts. Once I have everything, I'll tear the car down and go through it. Plan is to start on it in the fall and have it done by spring '09.

There is no real difference between the two except maybe a little bit in the height. I'm going to be buying a lot of stuff from Centerline for this project so I figure I'd stay loyal and buy the springs from them too.

Thanks, Anthony, for the explanations.
Let me study your close-ratio gear-set a bit; I might be interested in sourcing a unit from you. Like you, I'm looking to build an ultra-fun street car, with fluid manners at autocrosses and the occasional track day.
