Maybe it has something to do with safety (collision) rules (spec for USA Alfa's)?

Yes, it does... All stock GTVs sit high, because of this, and it doesn't look very attractive... That's the reason why many owners swap the stock springs for lower (and stiffer) sport springs.

Best regards,

Original GTV's did sit "a bit" high. I think it concerned bumper height and federal crashtests. He is (was) a photo of my '69 with (probably 165 but not more than 175 x 14's) back in the day. Part of the fender well gap was due to (small) tire size but most was due to meeting Federal regs. Actually the rear doesn't look too bad as opposed to the front.

My assumption is that this car was prepared for sale lately. When a car is sitting for few months or more with less weight than normal (without engine, windows etc'), it stays high for a while.

This car was restored without taking too much care for details, probably the guy wanted to invest less as possible and to get max. price.

IMO, a 1/2 azzed restoration is gunna fetch a 1/2 azzed price. Do it right or don't bother.

While I agree that this is not the best restoration, regarding ride height we are simply not used to seeing cars at their correct ride height anymore. 95% of the cars are restored and in the process LOWERED.

This car is sitting correct for an original car IMO.

In post #16, Cor came pretty darn close for a reason why the car appears to be high. For safety yes, but not for crash protection. The USDOT mandated a minimum headlight height (NOT bumper height). In fact, recall campaign #861007 issued 02 Mar 73 addressed this exact issue for the 1971MY US version 1750 GTV. With an empty trunk (except for spare tire, jack and tool kit) and a full tank of fuel, the distance from the center of the outside headlight to the ground must be a minimum of 24 inches.

Pete brings up a very valid point. It would interesting to know the headlight height of our Alfas as they are now (I can hear everyone scurrying round for tape measures ).

My lowest car is my '84 Spider, and the middle of the headlight is 22.5 inches off the ground. (Yes, it is pretty low. )

Best regards,
