Transmission Interchangeability

Are transmissions for a 1969 1750 and 1972 2000 interchangeable? I have a 1969 1750 Spider and a 1972 2000 GTV and I am thinking of acquiring a spare transmission.

Thanks

I believe the simple answer is "yes".

0ften when someone asks a question like this, they own a '69. And 1969 model Alfas were unique - your's has a hydraulic clutch with floor-mounted pedals, right? I've never seen a '69 bellhousing - does it have the slave cylinder retained by two snaprings, like the set-up used on hanging pedal cars?

If not, then you may need to install the '69 bellhousing onto the '72 transmission. I know that swapping bellhousings is necessary on pre-'69 (mechanical clutch) cars - I have a 115 gearbox in my '63 Giulia spider.

If your '69 box uses the "push down" style reverse lock-out, then you will need to retain the '72 gear lever, as the later boxes have a simpler system to prevent 5 --> Reverse shifts.

Yes you are right about the 1969's. It always proves to be the one oddball year where almost every system is unique and is applicable only to the 69's. (and hard to find)

My car does have the floor mounted pedals and a hydraulic clutch with a slave cylinder mounted somewhere underneath the passenger side. (if I'm not mistaken.

It seems that one transmission may not fit either car without some modifications.

Slave cylinder and its mounting are the same, though early on 69s used an adjustable rod on the slave, later dropped.

The trans and bellhousing as a unit are interchangeable in either, but there are shift rod differences that came in around 72 that make not all transes from the years interchangeable with all bellhousings. But if you put the whole thing in, it would be fine.
