'A' pillar rust repair

Hi All,

My main winter project is to do some rust repair on both A pillars on the GTV, but I've still been driving up through last weekend so I haven't gotten started yet. I was wondering if anyone has any cross-section pics of the pillar, or maybe a sketch, also for the top and bottom edges of the windshield frame. Just want to have an idea before I start cutting in. Also, are GTV windshield frames identical across all models years?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

How far down the A-pillar does your rust go? If you have rust in the lower sections and into the top of the front fenders/windshield surround, you're in for a cutting and fabricating adventure.

I just did a similar repair on my '74 GTV. I used doner panels out of a '67, which appeared identical in shape and construction.

First of all, removing a glue-in windshield can be tricky, as they almost always crack. I hope yours is the gasket type.

There are about 3 or 4 layers of overlapping panels and box-sections in the lower A-pillar/firewall/windshield surround/upper fender area, and cutting out all the rust can be tricky. You'll have to cut out much more of the upper layers of metal than otherwise necessary, just to get your cutting tools into the lower layers if there is rust below.

The actual A-pillars themselves are a relatively simple box section, pinched and spot welded at the windshield opening.

Many of the lower panel shapes have compound curves, so I fabbed them up out of 1 or 2" wide sections in order to get the curves right. Of course, buying whole replacement panels, drilling out the spot welds and disassembling the body panels in an orderly sequence would be the "correct" method. Mine was a 1-month driveway restoration for a daily driver.

The second pic shows how far I had to cut to remove rust. The doner firewall/windshield surround box section is sitting on top, and shows some of the box-section shape.

Hope this helps,

George

That's fantastic, thanks George. It really helps to be to see in advance how all the layers go together.
