I am just not big on 2000's . I am sure they have their virtues, but for me personally it's always been a 1750 or nothing. Asthetics to me is just as important as performance and frankly the styling changes that occurred on the 2000 were not to my taste in comparison to the all round sophisticated styling of the 1750's. And the improvement in performance against the styling drawbacks of the 2000 relative to the 1750 is enough for me not to want one. I know a lot of people who agree on this.

The classic car journals do consistantly point to the 1750 over the 2000 as the model to have time and time again. Emperically I saw this for myself when I lived in the UK and tried to track a 1750, a very hard thing to do. Over the same period of time I could have easily found a very good 2000 for a lot less cash. Everyone was chasing a 1750!! The same applies here in Australia, just try finding a good 1750 for sale, versus the number of 2000s that come up all the time.

Zinhead, I don't put a lot of stock in price guides. I find them to be wildly inaccurate and usually out of date. I go by what the market tells me things that I can see and observe for myself.

Phil,

I think I understand now. UK and Australia seem to have a 'hard on' for 1750s. OK, I can dig it...but it would appear that many folks in other countries like both the early cars and the 2000s, as they really are trading at roughly equal value.

Most recent examples that I actually know of:

71 1750 (Fair Cond.) - $4000 (USD)

68 1300 Jr. (Good Cond.) - $9000 (USD)

74 2000 (Good Cond.) - $11000 (USD)

69 1750 (God Cond.) - $10000 (USD)

Cheers,

Cheers,
Alex, maybe it's a right hand drive thing, or perhaps it's all the tea drinking . Who knows, I would like to get a Canadian perspective on things just for comparison.

PSK, what is the trend in NZ ?

Grieg and Pierre what about SA ?

I know that in OZ there seems to be a soft spot for 1750 and perhaps a large part of this is due to the fact that in this country the 1750 more than any other 105 had such a sucessful racing career. In the 1968-69 the 1750 GTVs gave the General Motors ( Holden) and Ford who both were running V8's a run for their money in the Australian Touring car series. On one occassion the 1750's nearly won outright at the Bathurst 500 ( now the Bathurst 1000, KM not miles anymore) Australia's greatest race . I would love to know what happened to these Bathurst cars ?

Cheers,

P

Personal experience with head gaskets:

1750 Blown head gasket

2000 Leaking head gasket

Head gaskets? Not a big deal, IMHO.

Personally I like the 1750 engine a little better, but that's a subjective opinion purely.

Well also in the US, engine displacement has always been given a lot of importance in car design. Drag Racing?? I remember when I told my dad that I'd taken my old Berlina up to about 5500 RPM. Being an old Flathead guy, he thought that was a sin. But then again an old Flathead would be like a 2.2L V8 with the RPMs topping out just above 3000. Fun engines to rebuild though.

I test drove a "pre-owned" Honda S2000 and had the revs up around 6700--very nice. The old car salesman shot me the wickedest glance.

Geez, with all the fireworks about which GTV model is best (1750), it's a good thing no one brought up what color they look best in (white), or the best rubber (A032R), or wheels (BWA Sportstar), oil (GTX 20W-50), shocks (Koni red).........

Uh, oh!! NOW I've done it!

Colour: unsure. I have a soft spot for Yellow Ochre because my first 69 GTV was that colour. My last two were white. My current white one started life AR516 (eggplant), but I've never had a red one.

Rubber: I'm planning on getting Yoko ES100 in 205/60X14
Wheels: Panasports
Oil: GTX 20W-50 Been using is for 34 years
Shocks: Bilsteins

Well, it looks like we can all agree on only one thing! That is that Castrol GTX 20W-50 is the best oil for our cars.

See? I'm looking for some commonality!

Well that is a good question. I no longer live in NZ being one of the few (?) that has migrated to Australia, but from my AROC involvement I would have to say that I saw a lot more 2000 GTVs.

In NZ though, Alfas rust real fast so the youngness of the 2ltrs could have been a factor ... also I was heavily involved in the classic car racing seen, and the extra cc's of the 2ltrs always helps on the race track.

I do recall working on a lovely 1750GTV race car (yep it still had a 1779cc engine) and it was a fantastic little motor ... sounded fantastic screaming on the rolling road dyno , anyway I digress

Any current NZ'ers on this site?

Pete

Very cool thread indeed!

Here in the melting pot of all rednecks (KY, USA) where we jump ditches and look for Daisy and Uncle Jessie , 1750 is considered to be a "hot" motor. Better cams for sure. But also had a problem with cranks. Story has it that the 2L cranks are better as they are hardened...nitrited...something that the 1750 cranks didn't get. And there is a history of 1750 crank failures. No personal experience....just the word from my local Alfa guru. Anyone had a 1750 crank failure? Wonder if that is true or not.

I like all the body styles. I will take one of each! And a Stradale, and any thing that starts with a G, TZ, or SZ!

Best Regards,
John M

Actually having said what I have about 2000, I have heard a rumour about a 2000 locally that is sitting in storage for the past 10 years and its resonably cheap. If I had the space I might consider it as a proposition. At least from a good turn around and resell point of view. I will keep you posted and if I don't get it I will endeavour to get some discovery photos .
