Oh yeah!! Try carefully installing a hard to find head gasket and forgetting the o-rings? (did that just once at least). Messy messy! New head gasket took two weeks to get.

Then there is installing a gasket (without roll pins) and having an o-ring slip out of place. Even messier! Did that too many times!

I thing the only head gasket mistake I never made was assembling the head without a gasket at all.

And that is just the beginning of the mistakes. Personally I think my greatest s**w-up was putting the oil slinger on the wrong side of the rear main seal. Didn't know until three seconds after finishing and starting the engine. I'd even mounted and aligned the hood and installed the shift lever and boots and everything. Had to pull it all out and pull the tx again......

IN THE MIDDLE OF A RACE!!!!! And a DNF would cost us a championship.

Duh!

Robert

I hope you had a lot of hands helping you that day! Sounds like a lot of pressure. It's always sucky to hear someone else's car runnin' good, when yours is in the pits. ( haven't used the word "sucky" in a while! )

Didn't get to the oil plug today. Was busy adjusting the SPICA. Gotta work on that some more tomorrow and hopefully change the oil.

These uh-loo-minn-umm motors leak oil like crazy, so you probably don't need to change the oil at all!

My engine doesn't leak much at all. There is a little residue, but no puddles under it. It even sat for 30 years letting everything dry out. The valve cover leaks a tiny bit but thats about it.

Finally got around to changing the oil today. Got that sucker out with some vise grips and a hammer. Worked great! Thanks for all the tips. I had all the tools ready if one didn't work.

I also tried to set the timing, but setting the advance without a tachometer is tricky. I used a timing gun and just set the idle timing. Hopefully my friend will send me my AutoGage. On the test drive, there's a little hesitation when throttle is heavily applied and some slight backfiring when coasting to zero in high revs. I'm thinking it's running a bit lean. Gonna check the plugs tomorrow and work on her some more.
