sill replacement

I am going to replace the outer and middle sills by new parts, while leaving the inner sill in place. This one side at a time (not both parts in one go). Do I have to reinforce the car as Akitaman does?

I just did that exact same thing on a 69 GTV.

If the floors are in and the inner rocker is in good condition you'll be ok in my opinion.

Here is a link to the repair.

Good luck,

Hello Jef,

I have removed the outer sill. Does not look too bad. Just a question: what is the thickness of the sheet metal you used to repaire the lower parts of the A and B pillars (the part that sits between the middle and outer sills)? If possible in milimeters. Thanks

Rafael,

I used 18ga (1.016 mm) sheetmetal to do all of the fabrication on the lower A & B pillars.

Good luck with your car.

Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply.
By the way, I find your website very useful to determine how to proceed, or to get inspired.

Jeff,

Just a couple of questions.

Why didn't you replace the inner sills? I guess that it is much more work, right? On your website I find that you removed the rust of the inner sills, and that you primed them. When should you preplace the inner sills; how much rus should they have before replacing them?

Is it possible to replace the jack points at the back without removing the inner sills? I guess there is not a lot of room to manouvre the jack points into position.

Perhaps the expert Akitaman can also shine some light on these questions...

Rafael

Rafael,

We decided not to do the inner-sils for a couple of reasons, one of them being a money issue, the second being after the treatment we deemed it to be a sound piece. Atkiman did advise me on this decision, (thanks again Daron) and it would of been better to replace the inner-sil if time and money was not an issue.

I've not had to ever replace the rear jacking points, but I think that you could replace them without too much trouble.

Hope that helps.

Jeff
