whining speedometer-?

Hi All,
I had my recently purchased 72 GTV gone over by a mechanic. He started up a punch list of things to be done over the winter/spring. One of the items he has is that the speedometer makes a whining noise between 30-40mph.
I have picked up a speedomter cable from centerline...the question I have is...has anyone encountered this problem is the past??? Should I pick up a gauge and replace that as well???
Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
alfawanna

Lube the cable with grease before you install it. Avoid short radius turns in the cable path and make sure that it will not get close to the exhaust system. It should stay quiet for a long time.

Noisey Speedometer

I hate those whiney speedometers! Back in my day, speedometers would display "40mph" and not snivel about it.

But seriously, the advice that Ed Prytherch gave you is good - a new cable that is well lubricated MAY solve your problem. It's worth a try. If it still whines, then yes, the gauge may need some work.

Buying a used speedometer will just get you one that is likely more worn than your existing gauge. A better solution would be to send yours to Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speedomenter, and have them re-bush the drive mechanism.

If the cable alone doesn't fix it, another thing you could try would be to just lubricate the drive on your old speedo - use heavy oil like motor oil (NOT WD40). It may fix it - for awhile.

Yes, this is a typical problem. Wait until your tach starts doing this - it will really drive you crazy!
