So Baka4alfa had two different doors. One pre-71 and one post-71 door. He wanted them to be correct so we sourced a door. The door was not perfect but we knew that.
Here's the door as it was. Not that bad right?
The doorskin is cracked and splitting away from the frame. This is normally a good indicator of substandard repairs under the paint. I bumped the grinder in the area and hit lots of body filler instantly.
Alfa's should look like they are "thin skinned" Thick style lines mean trouble is awaiting. This car had 7 different primers and 4 different colors.
When I saw that, I knew using a grinder was a waist of sand paper. It would only clog the paper and be a waist of time. So I used the evilest machine I own. If you mishandle this thing, you will be very seriously injured. It has tons of torque and a 2 1/2 hp motor. It weighs 25 pounds and turns at 5000 rpms. But it will get some paint off! BTW, now I know why my wife is putting me on a diet (there is a friend and customer, in L.A. that is dying laughing right now over that statement

).
Once all the paint is off I polish the surface with 120 grit paper. I do this so I can feel and see the defects better. Once all the damage is out I will scratch the surface again with 36 grit so the minor amount of body filler can grip to the surface. As you can see I circled all the damage.
Now I'm using the dent puller to bring up the damage. We do this by working shallow then to the deep. Never try to pull the deepest part out first.
I will pick up on this again later.
Thanks for looking!
