leave it to the pros

If your motor guy is even 1/10 as good with motors as Akitaman is with the body, then you should have no worries what so ever. The preperation of a great engine is all about how the cams work with the exhaust, and how these work with the carb jetting, and gearbox, rear diff ratio,...etc. So individual "bolt on" suggestions are usually not that helpful I find.

Good luck with the project, looking forward to tracking the restoration! And thanks to you and Akitaman for posting the updates.

Andrew,

Thanks for the advice. The motor guy (Tom) is very knowledgable and seemed very focused on what would be right for my restoration. Impressive to say the least. Akitaman keeps good company.

Thanks for the luck with the project. Hopefully I don't drive my wife too nuts with this.

Okay, so today we did a let-down for this car. Yes, we are a long ways from paint but This gives the customer plenty of time to reflect on his choice.

So Baka4alfa had two different doors. One pre-71 and one post-71 door. He wanted them to be correct so we sourced a door. The door was not perfect but we knew that.

Here's the door as it was. Not that bad right?

The doorskin is cracked and splitting away from the frame. This is normally a good indicator of substandard repairs under the paint. I bumped the grinder in the area and hit lots of body filler instantly.

Alfa's should look like they are "thin skinned" Thick style lines mean trouble is awaiting. This car had 7 different primers and 4 different colors.

When I saw that, I knew using a grinder was a waist of sand paper. It would only clog the paper and be a waist of time. So I used the evilest machine I own. If you mishandle this thing, you will be very seriously injured. It has tons of torque and a 2 1/2 hp motor. It weighs 25 pounds and turns at 5000 rpms. But it will get some paint off! BTW, now I know why my wife is putting me on a diet (there is a friend and customer, in L.A. that is dying laughing right now over that statement ).

Once all the paint is off I polish the surface with 120 grit paper. I do this so I can feel and see the defects better. Once all the damage is out I will scratch the surface again with 36 grit so the minor amount of body filler can grip to the surface. As you can see I circled all the damage.

Now I'm using the dent puller to bring up the damage. We do this by working shallow then to the deep. Never try to pull the deepest part out first.

I will pick up on this again later.

Thanks for looking!

Akitaman,

Just got back from Mexico and am looking at the pics. Nice shirt! BTW, those cans of Skyline chili that I sent won't do any good for your diet.

This is a dent puller. It's job is to raise the dent up, with out damage to the panel. To a degree I prefer that a car I'm building to have had body filler (like this door) instead of the old "drill in slide hammer" treatment. Most dents can be saved. Slide hammer dents were filled in with brass welding rod, and that work hardens the metal. This gives us very little opportunity to make clean repairs.

This is killing me seeing Akitaman in a Skyline shirt. Do you know how much of that stuff I ate in the 28 years I lived there?

I love it so much I make my own now - pretty damn good too.

Skyline Stuff

Fred,

Where in Cincinnati did you live? I am not a native, but went to college here and have been back and forth to Cincinnati ever since.

You can purchase the Skyline stuff online. Below is the link, though I'm sure your "home brew" is much better. The canned stuff doesn't do the real Skyline chili justice.

6060 Euclid Road was my family home. I lived in Hyde Park and Mt. Lookout after college (OU). I left in 85. Hey do you know Lee Scovanner?

It pays to know good people! Baka4alfa wanted a GTjr gauge cluster and we found one. Tomorrow The car goes on the rotisserie and starts it adventure.

Hello fellow Skyline enthusiasts, or chilisti, if you will. I too lived in California for years and had to settle for the occasional shipped cans (Dixie Chili is pretty excellent in the canned version). I'm still trying to sell my 74 GTV here in Cinti. if anyone is interested. Running great and looking a little rough but a very affordable daily driver. Let me know if any interest. Mark.
