70 GTJr, The Saga Continues!!!
Hi all,
The paint is coming off of the car at the moment. Apart from a wee discussion about removal of the dashboard BEFORE stripping everything is going well. I just hope my dashboard isn't damaged now from all the dust!!! Looks like there will be a few repairs needed!!!!!
Rear quarter has some bodgy repairs
Front panel has a wee bit of filler on it!!!
Around the rear window. Not too bad
Both lower rear guards and sills have rusty repairs
Windscreen corner. Might need to be redone. Notice my dashboard still fitted!!
A bit of sill work required too. Thought there might be
A "new" rear end has been grafted on. We think after a rear end shunt
There goes the budget!! Might be a couple of new panels required in this puppy

Not many Alfas of this age have no stories to tell, and some of that previous work looks okay.
Best
Pete
ps: And yeah get your dash out of there fast ...

Just a quick update as things progress. Interior and engine bay now stripped, car will be on the rotisserie on Monday. Talking to body shop about which panels will be cheaper to replace, rather than repair. Right rear wing is pretty much confirmed as needing replacement, and will get them to check the middle sills before deciding on sill replacement.
Right Front Crossmember
Right rear wing
I have heaps more piccys on photobucket. If you want to have a look, give me your email, and I can invite you to the abum

Gee that right rear wing is er, wrinkled to say the least. Best of luck and she appears to be in good hands now. We do have to remember that these cars were dirt cheap not that long ago and hard to move of second hand car lots ... unfortunately.

Graham, you do have your hands full. I don't think you are as bad off as you might think. The quarter can be pulled to near perfect. The wheel arch looks like it was Tig welded? If so thats great news, you can forge dolly that weld to look perfect. More pictures please!

Akitaman, forge dolly means what exactly? Does one heat the panel and hammer immediately to shape with body dollies held from the inside? How do you prevent panel distortion if this is the case?

Your kind of right Rossano. Forge dolly means that you use a oxyacetylene torch and heat the weld ( 1 to 1-1/2 inches at a time) to a cherry red (not the panel). Then you forge with a hammer and dolly. Once your done cool the weld with a wet rag. The panel does not warp in this technic. Very good question my friend.

OK you asked for it Akitaman, more pictures!!
Engine bay with battery box
Full frontal!! Woof!!
Rear panel is a bit moth eaten!!
Typical sill damage
Rear floor. Hard to see, but the red at the back of the passenger floor is the jack under the car!!! The hole runs from the center, nearly to the sill!!
Hmmm, are those pop rivets in that repair???
Remember, if you want to see all 294 photos, PM me with your email address, and I'll send you an invite to my photobucket album. Includes a few photos of the cat, for free!!

I see people down under, think A rivet gun is good substitute for welding too. That blasting material looks familiar, what is it? I'll p.m. you for the rest of the pictures.

Graham, would love to see the rest of the photos. You still away or back in Christchurch? As PSK said some of those repairs look competent and others are criminal. Looks like its been repaired at least twice in its lifetime.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think
Still away Richard, the wife goes in to see the car 3 times a week, and takes lots of photos. I finish in the UK in October, but might have to go straight to Italy for a training course before I start my next job, which is in Australia. So I'm not too sure when I'll be back in NZ yet.
Most of the inside and sill repairs were done at the same time. Later on the car had a rear end shunt, which accounts for the mess down the back. I have all the receipts for the car, but strangely the shunt doesn't appear anywhere. Must have been a very dodgy repair!!!!!

Hang in there. Full restorations always seem daunting at the outset but are worth it in the end. We also had to do extnesive work repairing our car's body (Trans Africa Rally Car) but luckily the rust was fairly limited as the poor things don't seem to rust that badly here in South Africa.
PS Congratulations on the rugby victory on Saturday.

A bit of an update, as my dashboard is back. WOW. Boy is it nice
Very happy with it.
Have purchased new carbs too. The cost to rebuild my 2 Weber 40 DCOE 27 carbs (might be 28's??) was more than buying 2 new ones!!
So.. bought 2 new Weber 40 DCOM carbs. Will have to play with jetting and choke sizes of course, but was going to have to do that anyway. The good thing about these carbs is that they have a Weber style accelerator pump that is adjustable, unlike the Dellorto version. As a bonus, the bodies have Made in Italy cast into them, even though they are made in Spain
I'll be keeping the old carbs, just in case
That's all for now. Nice and warm here at the moment. Off to the beach for Christmas Don't expect to much to get done in the next month or so.

Hey Graham that looks like it's coming along alright. Where did you get your dash done? It looks impeccable.
P.S. Did the designer of the S2 cars' dash really intend the binnacles to look like a fantastic cleavage?
