Sneds 67 GT

I recently purchased a 67 GT Veloce. The problem I have is in the gear shift lever. The stick was modified so pushing in for reverse is no longer required. When you drive the car, unless you put slight pressure (the weight of your hand is all it takes) on the shifter nob, there is a very obnoxious rattle coming from the lower area of the shifter mech. You can control the vibration by keeping your hand on the lever. Is this an easy fix? I wondered if this is a common problem and what would I need to do to restore the reverse lockout/detent mech? Can I modify the stick so there is no noise without repairing the mech?

Sounds like the previous owner changed the shift lever to address the problem that's plagueing you now (the earlier shift lever exaggerates any vibration much more than the later type), except that it wasn't the shift lever to begin with. The shift/detente mechanism may be responsible for the noise but also make sure you check for driveline/transmission for vibration.
