pix of '69 battery box
i've got a badly rusted out battery box in my '69 u.s. spec. gtv.
it's looking like the only answer is to have a new one fabricated.
does anyone have a picture of a whole one, including how it is
fitted to the wheel well?
i'm going to need to put something in place before the next track day.
i have a kludgy strap holding it in place right now.
i'm also dealing w/ some gas fumes in the trunk. maybe mounting the
battery in the trunk is an option, but i'm a little nervous putting it
in the trunk at this point.
any opinions/pix?
thanks,
john

John,
If you are going to do track days, I'd put it in the trunk. Best spot is to the right and above the spare tire hole (like a later Spider). When done correctly, you can just slip the spare in & out. Makes it much nicer to change the oil, too! Sorry I don't have pics, I'm sure others do though.
As for fumes, I have eliminated the canister on my track car and looped a hose from the upper port to the lower port. (look at your evap. system & you'll see what I mean) then vent the gas cap with a 1/32 drill bit & you're good to go.

that's great, mike. somebody else suggested i just get rid of all the fuss
in the vapor recovery system (my '69 doesn't route to the engine anyway).
i'm not sure i have the battery in the spare wheel well setup pictured.
do you set a cross-brace & fix the battery to it? do most go to a lite
battery?
john

John,
this is a timely post. I also need to either build a new tray (need the plastic battery shield as well) or relocate to the trunk. So, if someone could post pics of an original tray that would be great.

Here's a couple of shots I found somewhere on the web (or here).

Rossano,
If you can wait, I'll take some pictures the next time I see Vytas. I don't think the battery tray is much different than on my 74 if you want to come over and take measurements or ....

On my Super, I routed the cable under the floor along the right side of the driveline tunnel. You'll need a cable long enough to go up and over the rear axle and securely fastened out of the way. The local Napa store made me a very nice one for about $65. In the track car, I ran the cable through the interior. Much easier but perhaps not as neat for a street car.
Also, the picture above is probably a '74 GTV that had A/C. You can make your own shelf from a nice piece of aluminum. A bent up tab on each side with a ¼ hole in it will allow you to use a stock battery hold down too.

Demon Tweeks in the UK do a battery box for racing purposes. It bolts to the floor has a lid and two holes for the cables. It allows a battery inside as a tight fit and stabilises the whole job. Great for racing or a track day! This position for the battery was a GTA mod. Does anyone have a picture of a Autodelta car with this arrangement?

I have a similar problem with fumes in my 69gtv with spica. I'm not sure I understand about the vapour system. Can someone show or explain a little what is meant by routing the upper to the lower section on the fuel vapour system? I have long ago lost my fuel vapour canister and have just put a filter on the end of the hose but I would like a better solution.
Thanks
Jeff

If your tank and fuel lines are not leaking, then your fumes are most likely from the "filter on the hose". My fix is not EPA approved, but it does work. There are two hose fittings on the filler tube. Just take one section of hose and attach it to both fittings. This makes your tank a sealed system- no more vapor smell. BUT- tanks have to be vented to work so I drill a very small hole in the center of the gas cap. BTW, for this to work, you may need a new fuel filler neck boot (the black rubber thing that isolates the fuel door from the trunk interior) because they often are cracked.
