Finally my 74 GTV2000 Delivered-I am LUCKY-A GEM

Hello All,

Bought my 74 GTV2000 almost two months back. Getting it here (Montreal, Canada) was a nightmare but it was finally delivered this past Thursday.

I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

I am very happy and LUCKY!!!!!

I was told the car was all original and showing a true 75k miles but, as always used is used and you can't always believe everthing.

What I got was a more than I expected. While not perfect being a 1974 and not new, it certainly is a gem.

I got the original owners certificat (one owner till 1999), owners manual, and the entire service book with stamped history showing milage logged from day one. If you count the second owner who never plated the car and displayed it in his collection I am the third owner.

I can't believe it but every switch, button, and light bulb works. All wires under the dash etc...are original in the correct neat factory installed loaction and in great shape. There is no rust anywhere with the exception of some minor surface rust just below the front bumper which is not visable unless on a lift-no rust on the under carriage either. Even the dash light dimmer works.

It has had a re-spray (original PINO VERDE) some years back by the first owner but never any rust or body work done as he always babied the car from day one. It was only due to paint having shown its age.

The car will need a little detailing as the chrome on the driver side mirror has peeled and there are two minor cracks on the top of the dash (the wood looks as new) but other than that and the odd loose item I think I will leave it alone in its original state.

Pictures soon.

Regards,

Max G

Service

Hello,

I live in Cote Saint-Luc but work in Brossard soo thats wherei will be storing it. i have yet to service it as I have only had it for 3 full days and driven it twice when it was clear the day I got it and Saturday. However, there are two places I will be using. Any body and minor mechanical and electrical the car will go to a placce in Brossard called Clasic Euro Auto. Though I only got my first classic April of this year (76 Corvette) I have sort of known the guy for over 5 years while looking and he's very good by reputation and people go back to hm and even buy and sell through him now. he has a web site. For major mechanical or an Alfa specialist he knows someone that he puts his reputaion on that I have yet to meet but will get you the info.

Sitting in Platsbourgh

Ya I know. It almost did. I was losing hope. The only ****y part is that the shipping yard guy hd to move the car at one point to long term storage - OUTSIDE - and decided to leave the window a bit opened. The carpets were wet but seats not. I have removed minor things and lifted them leaving in my garage at of 30 degrees C. I am also drying everything even using a blow dryer for the little hard to reach areas.

I am just glad that the car turned out to be more than I expected and a true unmolested original in excellent shape. The condition truley shows it. As mentioned, I have the entire history from the first oil change, all books, records, millage logged ect...,the original title and plate form 1974 is neat too. Also got the second title from 1999 showing the transfer from owner one to the collecter owner two. Then obviously me as the third.

Sad to say but think its time to let the corvette go.

I have a mechanic come to where i live and work on my car...guy's outstanding.

he tuned my car last week..timing...pump etc...and i couldn't resist taking it out in the rain....still drying out in the garage.

There's a company out in dorval that does a rustproofing that is supposed to be incredibly efective..I can't remember the name..but ask around...
.. lot of the garages know them and use them..
If I find the details.. I'll let you know.

bon chance..

Max,
I'm looking to bring a GTV in from the US, since I can't get anyone here (T.O.) to give me any leads on restorable GTV's. I've checked out one at a bodyshop last week but it's been badly neglected (no windows - stored outside - etc.). How'd you find yours? I checked out a 72 GTJ (w/1750 engine) recently but found it'll need a major restoration (all sills, floors, etc.- looks OK from the top but....). For what was being asked, I'd be better off starting with a bare shell (and buying all the bottom chassis pieces) and put one together properly. Did you have any problems at the border?

Hello Fred

Thanks I was going to email you, ya its a good one. Also got the "Archivio Storico Alfa Romeo" site by Antonio emailed me back this AM confirming to me that what I was told about the cars history is correct. It was indeed sold in Europe as a USA spec model then brought over by the owner himself. The car was Produced May 30,1974 and sold in London June 6th 1974. They did not have the onwers name (or understandibly can't give that info out) but I have that along with the original tilte in the US etc.....

Will post pics soon.

Max

I found mine by chance on the net by doing a daily search on Google and Yahoo for "1974 Alfa Romeo GTV for sale" and other variations of it. It was a small collector/seller/museum with a website that had posted it. He also listed it on Hemmings but I got to it first just as it listed. Paid $8300US.

I will get back to you with details and mess that I wnet through as I did not get the final bill yet. If I was to do it again it would be much easier know what I know. I am not sure if a non functional car (as you mentioned you wnat a restorable one) changes anything but I do know that the shipping costs on a non runing car is more expensive.
So far I can tell you that if you can get a one stop shop and have a shipper that brings it to your door.

Option A: What I did and went through so far was:

-Get a closed transport from NC to a holding yard in Platsbourgh, NY / Quebec Boarder area by "YearEnd Transport" $1200 US$ (cannot cross the boarder as they are only US based but trust-worthy and nice.
-Then get a Registered importer "A1 Import/Export" to Clear the car for me. You can do this yourself and save the $300-$400 CAN$ but you must go there and bring the car over yourself (which if not running makes it harder) and stop at the HomeLand Security area and clear the car as the new owner/importer. They could decide to hold the car for up to 72 hours but rarely happens unless you look funny or dont have the papers in order.

I did not have the time so I had to get more transport

-Then I had to get freight forwarder, an international transporter (not sure who I used as a friend did it for me) to pick up the car in "Bond" and transport it to Montreal to a Customs Holding/Clearing warehouse. I think the company was "David Kirsch Freight Forwardering" as the paper i signed had thier name on it.
-Then I had to go the next day to this warehouse once cleared/inspected for sercurity (not road worthyness) such as drugs etc... I guess, and sign for the car and drive away.
-I will have to pay the GST on the Canadian $ amount purchase price to the Canadian Governmet, the transport in bond, and the freight forwarder fees.

Option B: What I wish I had done
Get a one stop shop to bring the car to your door. I assume that in the end with less hands in the pot you will pay less-or at least get it done faster. A company name I was given in these forums was "Maislin Transport". I have the contact name in my inbox and will get you that info and who gave it to me. I have had many emails and not sure which member was knid enough to ravage through old papers in order to help. He should get the credit not me. It was too late for me as the US transport had already picked up the car once I got the name.

Best regards

Max
