SOMEONE MUST HAVE TRIED THIS ? 1971 GTV-can I fit rear three point seat belts

Hi All,

I am considering a 1971 GTV and would like to know how easy it is to fit 3 point seat belts in the rear and how safe these would be.

I have two smallish children (a 4 year old who uses a booster and a 7 year old who is fine with normal three point belts in other cars) and I need more safety than a lap belt would provide.

Thanks,

Douglas.

I bought my 74 GTV with the same intentions, but after driving the car around for a while and test fitting some children with car seats back there, I decided the back seat just wasn't safe enough in the land of SUV's.

i don't know about a 71 as i have a 74, but if you pull the seat bottom you might be
surprised to find belt mounting points on the trans hump and on each inner fender bulge.
then look in the trunk....each side of the package tray has one, too. and they are sae, not metric...7/16ths i think

We have fitted 3 point seat belts in the back of our 1750GTV with child seat.
But you have to modify the track of the passenger seat to accomodate as it does not go far enough forward. Then lengthen the belt also!

Here's where the mounting points are on my 73:

1. Outer region of the "parcel shelf" behind the rear seat: the reinforced mounting plates can be seen/felt from inside the boot/trunk.

2. Base of the seat back on each side of the tunnel, probably under sound deadening, but can be seen from underneath by the trans tunnel. Push something thin through from below to tell you where to start digging in the sound deadening.

3. The hardest to find, normally buried under sound deadening and trim: just under the foam/vinyl padding on the inner wheel arch. It's a sheet metal bracket spot welded to the inner arch, so a short bolt is required (there is no hole through the arch). They are on the inner wheelarch itself near to where it joins the inner side panel. You will probably need to lift a few inches of vinyl trim (the bit glued to the wheel arch, not the actual screwed on side panel) to find them and dig in the sound deadening with a screwdriver. They are slightly above the level of the seat base, so the bolt ends up just above the seat cushion.

My kids have travelled in the back of mine since they were very young (oldest now 11). Coolest car on the school run...

Regards,

Mark.

Hello,

Can some pls confirm that the hole in the rear shelf (first picture) is in fact the first attachment point as explained above? Thanks

Just for completeness I add two other pictures showing the other attachment points; next to the tunnel, and on the inner wheel arches.
