My '74 GTV 2000

Hi all,

I'm from New Zealand. I found the attached after much searching. She's been garaged all her life, just about perfectly straight everywhere I look. Shows usual wear and tear after 30 years, but nothing major. A perfect newbie project.

In one of the other threads there was some talk about tacho placement - right versus left. Mine seems contrary to everyone else so I thought I'd post a picture of that too.

Hi Manx,

Good to see another Kiwi. Which part of the country?

Nice looking car, where did you find it?

Mines 1973, white, bit rough around the edges. Had it since 1996, used it for 7 years as a daily driver, now have a 156 2.0 TS for the rainy days.

Regards,

Mark.

Welcome to the BB, Manx!
Great-looking car! Somehow this doesn't look like any project car that I ever saw...

This car must be from the South Island ... say Christchurch to be that good. North Island cars just cannot save themselves from the rust bug!

Good on you, I'm jealous! ... but rev counter IMO should be on the right .

Pete,

Dunno how much difference it really makes, it rains everywhere... although living too near to the sea doesn't help. Looked at a Fiat Uno once that had been parked by the ferry in Devonport everyday, not pretty. My car has been all over the country, in the course of its 27 changes of ownership(!).

What's with the gauge question? (which thread was it?), mine is the same, just flicked open Bremner's book which has a photo on page 77, credited to Alfa Romeo Archives, with rev counter on the left...

Mark.

Christchurch (apparently ... I'm a North Island Kiwi myself) is apparently less humid and drier and I have seen a few Christchurch old cars (including Alfas) and they were minters.

I'm sure my 1750's is on the right ... but just stirring really

Cheers
Pete

Yeah, I'm sure that there is some truth in the SI story. I just wish that my car looked as nice as Manx's. My project's bigger than his project, nah, nah, nah...

Although not as big as yours's Pete, from your photos. Excellent job! What state is the car in currently?

Mine's due for another session with the MIG soon, when I find out how bad it really is under the outer sills.

Mark.

Hi guys, yes originally a Christchurch car for the first decade of it's life. And it's lived in a garage in Wellington since. The previous owner hasn't driven her too much in the past few years and kept it well maintained.

In terms of a project - it's more cosmetic than mechanical. There are trims and grommets missing all over the place. A few spots of rust in the boot and under the boot lid - mostly surface and not serious - and 'a' bubble around rear window and one more in lower valance. It does need to be repainted at some point, the paint is stone chipped and crazed in a few places. Got to be expected. All in all I'm pretty darn lucky.

Actually I've got every receipt for every penny spent since '85 so I know how much care has been taken (like Continental Cars replacing the wiper blades!). There's been some suspension repairs (bushs etc, and replaced a front spring platform due to rust). There has been a bit of rust cut out and removed from a sill - but it's been done so well I couldn't spot it at all.

There has been some wiring tampered with that I'm going to have to explore. Not looking forward to that at all. I had an alarm installed (completely invisible) and the installer now informs me there's something dickie with the door pin as the interior light has a tendency to stay on. He also found a second after market cigerette lighter under the second console (radar detector I'd guess).

M

PS. The tacho debate is on page 2 of this thread.

Sitting in my new (to me) house's garage and waiting for me to remove all the cr@p out of the way so we can do some more work. Only moved in about 1 month ago ... OR do you mean what State, and that would be NSW, Sydney . But the car was bought by me in Auckland NZ.

Thus basically as photo'ed at the end of it's thread.

My mind is in building big new workshop mode ... but may have to put that on hold and get to work on the car.
Pete

Manx, is that an Italtune service sticker on the air filter ? That was my business. I would have tuned it. Who was the last Christchurch owner? Is that the car I saw in Trade Me? If it was the price looked cheap. Am I correct in assuming you live in the Wellington region?

Hi Richard,

Yes it is. Last CC owner was David Barker who bought the car in 1985 and sold it to Scott Barker in 1997. I bought her from Scott. Yes it was the one the was very briefly on TradeMe. As it turned out the owner was only a couple of kms away so I didn't waste any time getting around there. And Yes I'm in Wellington.

Do you remember the car at all?

... and the road tests after the tune up

Always amuses me with customers of garages that lovingly baby their cars, and then take them to a garage for servicing ... well my father used to run a garage and if anything Italian (or otherwise interesting) came in, well lets just say a road test was required ... and infact bloody good for the car (and mechanic).

Arh those were the good old days
Pete
ps: Note I'm sure Richard drove with all necessary due care ... ... just having fun.
