'66 GT Sprint Veloce Restoration

Having bought what, on the surface, looked like a reasonable '66 Sprint Veloce, I thought I'd tart it up a bit. Before:

And, oh dear. Not too long before Gremlins were uncovered (the guy doing the car's bodywork spent ages trying to find some metal underneath the Bilblical quantaties of filler - he'd have done better with an industrial jackhammer getting it all off):

Quite a few bits to be repaired/fabricated etc. The rear left fender had a few 'issues' including a cheapo bike spanner that was trapped between the fender and wheel well prior to its emancipation:

The RH side being lined up so that doors hang properly etc (I know it looks like a lot of body filler, but it's a damn site thinner than before - nothing more than 3mm or so. The metal was so bad that was was no option other than replacing all the panels)

And the interior with an awful fabbed-up dash with the wrong dials - oh, and some turbo guages added below the centre of the dash - what does that tell me?

I intend to keep the exterior as original as possible (though probably leave the bumpers off) and I want to get the interior lookin'g 'period'. I have a ropey dash that I will get refurbished, but am having hell's own job finding the correct front seats (I only have 1750 GT seats at the moment). Any Ideas?

Thanks GTV - I think the PO had shares in a pop rivest and body filler factory I don't know where the black serpent came from - it came with the car (the car has been in SA since 1966, so it could really be from anywhere). It is now in the bin because it was covering up loads of..... body filler

Gearbox, Transmission

Last week I sent the gearbox off to be refurbished - I was having to double-declutch when changing down to third and second, so I thought it fair to assume I had at least two shot synchros. After asking for a quote on Tuesday 21 I was surprised on Friday to be told it was ready and would cost X - As it happened a fairly reasonable price for 4 x synchro rings and front and rear seals.

Rather annoyingly, I did not take a 'before' photo, but I thought it came back looking pretty tidy (I'll have to wait and see how it performs):

So as it is going to be a while before it gets installed, I thought I'd clean it up a bit and share the results with you. Pic 1 shows some of the baked oil on the gearbox, and my tool of choice - a bog standard drill with a 2" wire brush. This did a superb job of getting rid of the crud on the gearbox, although I could not get into all the nooks and crannies.

Pic 2 shows halfway though the job - the darker areas ar those I have brushed.

Pic 3 shows the finished product: I did the nooks and crannies with fine wire wool (wach out for the little bits of metal getting everywhere) which resulted in a superb polished finish. So I did the rest of the box with wire wool and it looked very 'bling'.

To protect it I sprayed it with WD40 and gave it a good wipe down. This gave a nice semi-matt titanium-like finish. In all it took about 2hrs and was by far the easiest of cosmetic jobs I have done on a car.

I am sure I can find a makeshift (no pun intended) rubber boot replacement for the slave cylinder on mine that is split, but does anyone know where I can find one for a 2ltr gearbox? See pic below:

I've seen worse. A 67 GTV came into the shop of the late Gary Valant. It had a pretty decent paint job. This car had 1/4" of bondo on the roof. The quarter panels had been replaced, but, there was a 6 inch overlap with the original quarter panels. When the "new" quarter panels were removed, there was a ton of rust on the overlapped portion. It was a real mess. you car, looks much better.

Thanks Ossodiseppia. Having used a lot of bandwith browsing AlfaBB and having seen some of the monumental tasks many people are successfully undertaking, I realise I should count my blessings. Thank you for the morale boost

All the same, it is daunting when one pulls of some paint or mechanicals to find a nightmare, and an expensive one, underneath.

I'll post a few more pics tomorrow after I have been to the bodyshop.
