My New '67 GT Jr.
Hi folks,
I'm glad to report that I just bought a '67 GT Jr. from Oregon, which arrived at my house yesterday. It was pretty dirty when it came off the auto-transport, but after a wash, the paint positively glistens!
It's a bit of a mixed bag of a GT Jr., as it no longer has its original 1,300, but a 2-liter with Spica; I have a set of Webers that I may put on, we'll see. It's also got some GM wheels on it ; my intention is to install my Momo Vegas, but I recently found that one of the Momos is cracked, so that'll have to wait till I find another wheel (anyone has a cast-center one, 6"x14, please let me know). Thirdly, it has some ungainly black sports seats in it, which are actually very comfortable and supportive, in addition to a Momo steering wheel. The car was originally Azzurro Spazio AR504, which translates to SPACE/LIGHT BLUE, now red.
Mechanically, it all works well, except a little difficulty in starting on cold mornings.
So far I'm very happy with what I have, as the body is mostly sound, except for a few rust bubbles near the rockers; I'll deal with those much, much later, as this is intended to be a "driver", though it looks good from 20 ft. away. For a sportier stance, I'll probably take the bumpers off and lower the front a bit; naturally, I'd really like my Momo wheels on there!
The car needs lots of little things corrected, but there's plenty of time for that. This will be a keeper, as it's able to take my entire family of 3 on driving tours and whatnot - something my Spider couldn't do. I'll keep updating this thread as I do things to the car.

They look a bit like 2000 GTV wheels, at first glance.

Congratulations on your new acquisition. You can't own too many 750-101-105 Alfas!

You sure they're GM wheels? It's kind of amazing that the sombrero-style center caps would fit into a GM wheel so well. And the holes around the circumfrence sure look Alfa-like. Are they 14"? Someone is going to be asking: "what model GM car did they come from?"

The front end does look oddly high. Are the tires too small? Does it have gas shocks?
I'd think twice about removing the bumpers - a street car looks naked without some chrome trim at both ends and your Sprint has nicely fitting bumpers. You didn't mention using it for autocross - even if you envision some competiton use, it isn't as if those little stainless bumpers add much mass.

Fangio, in fact we'd been waiting for the perfect sedan to come along (I preferred the earlier Ti), but none did; that would've been the perfect family Alfa. I'm also a sucker for a pretty Bertone coupe, so this is my third one... having a back seat is merely my excuse to Tina for buying it ;-). I had a good look at the backseat today, and think I can weld in two LATCH-type hooks to the floor in order to hold Jules' child seat, right in the middle of the bench so that he has more legroom.
Regarding the wheels, Jay, the P.O. told me that they were GM wheels, and that they've confounded Alfisti up in Oregon to no end (they look like Alfa, but not quite...), till they're told that these were made by the General. I'll find out what model GM these came from (probably the spare wheel!). The tires are actually quite chunky, 195/70s at least, and 14"; they hold the road well, but they seem a bit overbearing on the car; recall that Jr. originally came with 155/15s, if I'm not mistaken, but I'm certainly not going that small. Some kind of performance springs/shocks underneath there; will have to check those out as well - they work well, as the car's ride is compliant and corners fairly flat.
Help me out on this one: just like my previous '71, the exhaust smell comes right into the cockpit when the window's rolled down, and I'm not certain if it's coming in from the window, or elsewhere. My first guess is the tail-light gaskets being bad, or the lack of a full trunk seal. Anywhere else I should think of? There are a few patches on the floors (which may contain holes), and the exhaust system may also have holes in it (needs renewing due to rust). Lots of investigating, which makes such endeavors so much fun.
A few more photos (that's our new 2012 FIAT 500 Sport in the background; I must have done something right this year):

Don't forget to "dry-fit" the child seat first. I thought of doing the exact same thing (middle placement) when my son was younger but the problem was ceiling height (or lack thereof). Modern child seats (toddler not infant) usually have a very tall base not to mention the "hump" between the two rear seats. For it to work, I would have needed a "low-profile" child seat. Never did find one... bought a Super... problem solved . Hope you can find a way to make it work. Maybe modifying a child seat (base).
Again, congrats on the step nose. Very beautiful car.

Good advice; I'll give it a try tomorrow. My son's 3.5 years old, and still fits in a largish child seat. If the ceiling's a problem, I'll try with the seat cushion removed.

I haven't had the exhaust fume problem with my Sprint, but it seems as I have read of other owners' issues in that area. I would look at the deck lid gasket, and tail light gaskets as probable paths for the fumes to enter the cabin.

Beautiful car. Makes me want to have another GTV.
If you plan to drive it in the street, keep the bumpers on. You can get a "fix it" ticket in California for driving a bumperless car. Anyway, I'm with Jay, it looks better with bumpers on.

Congratulations on your lovely GT Jr, Patrick. I think her stance is perfect and original, cars on early pictures do show a bit of 'lift' above the front wheels.
The boot gaskets may well be responsable for the fumes intake. When I got my 66 GTV, it had rubbers on the trunk rim instead of the lid rim and the fumes were overwhelming. After these gaskets were removed and the correct ones installed under the lid, the fumes were gone

Patrick,
Congratulations on your GTJ (and your 500), you have great taste in cars.
When I bought my GTJ, it had the same problem with exhaust fumes in the cockpit. I removed the tail lights and used a light coat of silicone with the gaskets to seal them up. The trunk gasket was not the correct type and mounted on the body rather than the trunk-lid as it should. I "stepped into the 'Zone" and purchased a roll of EPDM rubber weatherstipping; and using some 3M trim adhesive, put a new seal on the trunk lid. Worked perfectly and the exhaust fumes were gone. I'll post a picture of the seal cross section later today.

Congrats on the purchase, it looks like a nice clean solid car (yet another from the west coast). I was hoping you'd eventually come around to "our" side.

So.....seeing that you'll be correcting a few things on the car.....unless you already have the correct front bumper...there was one posted FS here quite recently...
